What private preventative healthcare or vaccines have you paid for your children?

Inspired by the chat about private vaccinations on the meningitis thread at the moment.

What private preventative treatment, vaccines, other stuff have you sought for your children?
Basically I want to know what the NHS is missing that I can pay for. Lucky position to be in financially, but we don’t have actual private healthcare.

I didn’t get chickenpox vaccine for mine, but both have had early private orthodontic treatment (palate expanders).

Have been thinking as they’re both sporty about having a heart scan when a bit older and would pay for this if needed.
And now Men B boosters.

What else is worth doing outside of the NHS?

Chicken pox vaccine

I paid for the chicken pox vaccine for my youngest

MissisBee · 16/03/2026 07:22

Both of mine had the chicken pox vaccine. Didn't stop my eldest getting it but it was extremely mild.

Just chicken pox.

DaffodilsandDillies · 16/03/2026 07:27

Men B when the vaccine first came out but I'm surprised to learn it doesn't last so will need to pay again for eldest !

Worldgonecrazy · 16/03/2026 07:28

Paid for all of them privately to get the best personalised protection for my daughter based on time of year of birth, breast fed, and to minimise requirements for boosters by allowing her immune system to develop enough for vaccines to work long term. I was advised to give Men C if she went to uni, and HPV only when she becomes sexually active. She had Men B vaccine as a toddler.

we didn’t bother with chickenpox and she now has natural immunity anyway.

mynameisnewtoday · 16/03/2026 07:29

Even if not sporty all young people 14-35 should have a heart scan.
12 young people a week in the uk die from a cardiac event that was undiagnosed.
a simple ecg can pick these things up and are currently offered by the charity CRY.
If you or your kids are in this age bracket please look into it.

BertSymptom · 16/03/2026 07:29

Just chicken pox so far. Luckily our second will be eligible for that on the NHS so won’t have to pay privately again.

Pox vaccine

Chicken pox. Worth every penny!

Out of interest, why HPV only when she becomes sexually active? Might that not end up being too late?

PurpleThistle7 · 16/03/2026 07:41

My kids are 13 and 9 so I paid for chicken pox. I have a reminder in my calendar about Men B for a few years from now and will pay for that if it’s not on the nhs by then.

AdjacentPossible · 16/03/2026 07:43

DS has has cardiac screening provided by the charity CRY (I think kids need to be over 15 to be eligible for this), and we’ll probably get him vaccinated against chicken pox as he had this very mildly when young.

I’m planning to check what meningitis vaccinations he’s had, as I’m not completely sure about these.

AdjacentPossible · 16/03/2026 07:46

Sorry, the age range for cardiac screening via CRY is 14-35 as @mynameisnewtodaysaid -

Thank you, I wasn't aware of this. My dcs are in this age range.
I did Google, but there's a lot of conflicting information out there.
Can you be more specific on what I'd actually book? I don't have private health care and am on minimum wage but heart issues run in the family so anything that could help I'd gladly go without to pay for.
Thanks again.

Mydogisagentleman · 16/03/2026 07:48

DD grew up abroad.
She's had lots of vaccinations that UK children wouldn't have had. Rabies and Japanese encephalitis for example.
I sought out and paid for chickenpox.
We spent a lot on orthadontist treatment too.

Just seen that link, thanks @AdjacentPossible

AdjacentPossible · 16/03/2026 07:57

No problem@JacknDiane- if you sign up in the website, they email you when there are sessions local to you. You do need to sign up quickly though.

mynameisnewtoday · 16/03/2026 07:57

This should be the link

https://www.c-r-y.org.uk/screening/

slots are hard to get but you can go on a list to be notified when they become available in your area.
The appointment lasts a few minutes and is a simple ecg which is then checked by a cardiologist. If anything shows up then the young person is sent for further testing.
The charity is campaigning for the nhs to provide this screening as they don’t currently.

Cardiac Screening

Cardiac Screening - Cardiac Risk in the Young

CRY offers subsidised cardiac screening with an ECG to young people between the ages of 14&35. An ECG is a simple way to diagnose most cardiac abnormalities

Yes, HPV BEFORE she becomes sexually active otherwise it's too late

SnowIsOn · 16/03/2026 08:13

Good idea for menB calendar reminder - I will get them when the time is suitable. I know I looked this up but can’t remember what I concluded other than to wait a bit.

Useful thread, thank you.

Marylou2 · 16/03/2026 08:14

I asked my daughter to get a Meningitis B booster course before she went to uni in October. She wouldn't. Have just messaged her again now. I know she'll find it irritating but can't not do it. I'll obviously book and pay.

Offherrockingchair · 16/03/2026 08:16

Chicken pox, meningitis, private dental/orthodontics.

JacknDiane · 16/03/2026 08:24

Have registered on that link, thanks. Its all fully booked just now, but hopefully something will come up soon.

I recently had a doctors appointment where the doctor put a small clamp thingy on my finger and said this is similar to an ecg......am I correct, or mistaken here? Can doctors do an ecg during a routine appointment?
