Bullying in school, what to do?

Hi all, we have a situation with my 12 year old son.
He has been bullied since he was 4 by a boy in his class. Fairly consistently with periods of time where it has settled and they have been OK with each other. This boy has called him names, hit him, slammed his head into the wall etc
He has also been violent with other boys in his class but not to the same extent as with my son.
We have been I to the school over the years, sometimes they have been OK but in general it's very much brushed off.
He has a lovely group of friends and gets on well with the rest of his class.
On one bad occasion where the boy punched him in the face, I contacted his mum. She abdenied that her son would ever do anything like that and she basically told us to get lost.
She hasn't spoken to us since.
The school dealt with it and asked him to apologise. It was witnessed by a lot of the class who backed up my sons version of events.
Fast forward, there was some class group chats which my son was on, he removed this boy from them. Bad behaviour for sure, we noticed and took the phone away. Others also removed him from groups as he isn't liked because of how he treats them.
His parents have contacted us saying our son is a bully who is ruining their sons mental health and deny any issues with their son ever happened. We have had 8 years of non stop bullying. All blame is on our son.
They have been abusive in the messages. We stopped responding.
We have no idea what to do or how to move forward
The school atmosphere will be so awkward.
He is liable to go in and hit my son tomorrow in school as that is his form.. so stressed

Firstly, get a handle on WhatsApp. DS1 is a bit older than your DS, has a few contacts on WhatsApp, and has unknown numbers blocked. He cannot join groups without his (or our) permission. Class group chats are trouble.

Secondly, alert head of year to the abusive messages and ask for DS to have a check in when he arrives at school. Staff will be able to monitor interactions during school. Staff will be aware that this child needs monitoring, given his previous behaviour, and will have protocols in place to handle him.
