How many of you do boosters for your cats ?

I expect a number of strong responses to this question. How many do yearly boosters after the initial kitten jabs?

OP posts:
Orangebadger · 15/03/2026 08:49

I do every year, why wouldn’t I?

ICanLiveWithIt · 15/03/2026 09:04

I do, but only because the cattery wouldn't take her if we didn't. She's a house cat, (adopted as an older cat who'd always been kept inside) so very little risk of her getting anything. As a child, non of our cats had boosters and all of them them were outside cats, so aside from the requirements of the cattery, which I wouldn't use if I had an outside cat, I don't really think I'd bother.
Why are you asking?

Oioiqueen · 15/03/2026 09:04

A lot of catteries require cats to have had yearly boosters. Mine is always done anyway but she is a little old lady now so I appreciate the full check up whilst she is there also.

Yes, every year, plus a half yearly check up.
I have a monthly installment plan which covers all jabs, flea, tick and worming treatments, a general check up and now that Toasty Boy Cat is a senior he gets discounted blood tests if needed. Toasty Boy Cat is not impressed.

AllotmentTime · 15/03/2026 09:06

Why would you bother getting the initial ones if you're not going to follow up with yearly boosters?

And in answer to your question yes, I do... how about you OP?

Trampoline · 15/03/2026 09:07

Your insurance policy may not be valid if you dont.

AllotmentTime · 15/03/2026 09:09

@ICanLiveWithIt fwiw, some cat viruses can survive for a long time without a host and can be easily carried around on shoes / etc. So it's well worth vaccinating even indoor cats.

OrdinarySloth · 15/03/2026 09:10

I do, as they’re not that expensive and we’re there anyway for her annual check up. She’s a house cat and I still think it’s worth it in case she ever goes missing or has to stay somewhere with another cat.

dastardlydani · 15/03/2026 09:11

I think statistically it will be less than half, MNs won’t be a true representation

TheCurious0range · 15/03/2026 09:11

Why wouldn't you?
Our vet does Vax for life it was £99 and covers all of his vaccinations from the first ones until he dies.

GoodVibesHere · 15/03/2026 09:11

I do them but I'm not entirely sure of the need to. I probably should read up about it but haven't found the time. One of my cats HATES going to the vets so I do wonder if I should just stop taking her unless she's unwell.

I pay the expensive monthly 'pet club' for flea treatment too. I don't know if it's really worth it.

Alwaystired23 · 15/03/2026 09:12

Yes, I have x3 cats and they get an annual booster as part of their annual check.

PropitiousJump · 15/03/2026 09:13

Yes, it's a requirement that they're up to date to go in the cattery, so we wouldn't get a holiday if we didn't!

Chemenger · 15/03/2026 09:15

I do vaccinate but I don’t do regular flea treatment, only if I see signs of fleas. Vaccinations aren’t that expensive and as a PP said our insurance requires them. Flea treatments are expensive and I don’t like releasing strong pesticides into the environment if they’re not needed. DCat doesn’t hunt so he’s not likely to pick up worms.

That's another question... How many people insure their cat?

Miskast · 15/03/2026 09:15

Annually, it's needed for the cattery. Vet checks teeth and weight at the same time and we pay for a claw clip.

EverardDeTroyes · 15/03/2026 09:17

The single most traumatic experience of my life was watching my beloved childhood companion die of cat flu (in the days before vaccination) so yes, I always have my cats vaccinated every year. I am not so hot on fleaing and worming and I never take them for the free 6 monthly check up as just the act of going to the vet stresses them too much, but the annual booster is non negotiable.

Ours are vaccinated at the annual check up.
Insurance too , but the boys premium is much higher than his sisters .

Pixiedust1234 · 15/03/2026 09:17

Always. Why wouldn't I want to protect her from the cat's version of AIDS which is extremely transmissible between cats?

I've even cut back on other things to ensure I could afford it some years.

herbalteabag · 15/03/2026 09:17

I used to do yearly but now not as often. My vet said there is an argument for both sides. Most cats have acquired immunity by the time they are older. My cats already had feline herpes as kittens, before I got them from a rescue, so no vaccination has any effect on that. I don't put them in catteries and never have.

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 15/03/2026 09:18

I did every year. Think I paid £99 ONCE for vets 4 pets vac for life and never paid another penny.

I think you are right. The vet wants £228 to do my three and that is with a discount.

Definitely a lot less than half!

My cats have all been insured for decades. We’ve probably at least broken even. Current cat recently had £1000 worth of dental work, a previous cat had £2500 spent on radioiodine treatment for her thyroid. Add on mysterious coughing (that only ever happens on a weekend) and freak injuries falling out of trees and it soon adds up.

dastardlydani · 15/03/2026 09:21

@BigButtons its pointless asking on MNs as you will just get responses from those that do.

I don't have any pets now & my cat was insured, boosted etc but I know its not the norm.
