Either the viewing platform or the charcoal project for me.

H202too · 15/03/2026 06:26

I think one that doesn't cause loads of resources needed all around the country.
They could just plant more trees.

Not keen on any of them tbh, but I’m not a fan of the NT’s installations that add nothing to the site they put them in. The garish ‘fort’ they stuck at the top of Housesteads a few years ago being a prime example. Want a viewpoint? Walk up to one on Hadrian’s Wall. Want to hear sounds of nature? Stand next to the Wall, close your eyes, put your phone away in your backpack for a bit.
If I had to choose one it would be the charcoal project, but far, far better to plant more trees in appropriate places and keep as many natural environments open for as many people as possible.

mellongoose · 15/03/2026 06:50

Why do they want to build a viewing platform on a pristine site? Doesn’t make sense to me. Leave nature alone.

I like the idea of the story of 1000 trees. Maybe more tree planting.

Arewethebadguys · 15/03/2026 07:16

They're all really a bit meh aren't they? Could they not just plant some trees? Wonder how many thousands of pounds have been spent to this point?

Zhu · 15/03/2026 07:16

Just seems like a silly reason to spend money. The trees that have already been planted from the felled one are the best legacy. Use this money to reforest.

Plant another sycamore for the generations to come

stickydough · 15/03/2026 08:54

I don’t like any of them much but voted for the charcoal. Agree with pps that anything involving installing platforms or unnatural things is jarring. All people want is trees and natural beauty to be respected.

Plant an Oak if you want it there for generations to come. Sycamores are pretty much giant weeds! They seed everywhere, don’t live long 60-80 years at most, and are not native. Seedlings are poisonous to grazing livestock. They don’t even make good firewood.
A sycamore supports something like 20-30 species of insects, an Oak tree 2000 species.

If you want to plant a tree, there are so many better options!

Swissmeringue · 15/03/2026 08:59

Couldn't bring myself to vote for any of them, I'd much rather they just planted more trees

FindingMeno · 15/03/2026 09:00

I like the last one best.
Surely replanting and a plaque would happen also?

They have planted more trees. Seeds were collected from the felled Sycamore Gap tree and propagated in specialist tree nurseries. Some of the saplings have already been planted in locations across the UK.

I can't get that link for voting to work - keep getting cloudflare going round and round in circles asking me to confirm I'm human, and then asking again and again. I gave up in the end.

This ^

Can't they just plant another tree? With protection around it, of course.
