Only one to complain about gel nails.

One of my nieces has started to work in a salon after working in the spare bedroom doing gel/builder nails.
She is towards the end of the 2 year course. Has 10 certificates from day courses. At the moment she has 24 regular clients and are returning every 3/4;weeks. A new client came last Friday on Monday she messaged to say two of the nails had chipped.
Came on Wednesday to have them repaired. Tonight she has messaged to say that they have now chipped again.
The boss has now got involved. Niece is going to do these nails again tomorrow. Boss is going to supervise.
I think this woman is taking the pi**.

Do you think she's lying?

SpiralSister · 13/03/2026 19:58

Ok then. What are you looking for here?

AsparagusSeason · 13/03/2026 20:02

The customer is right here, surely?

Why? Gel nails chip 🤷‍♀️ Why are you so certain the customer is right?

They’re not indestructible. It’s just a thin plastic coating. If they are on enhancements chipping is very rare though - so if it’s not a natural nail then my answer would be different. My answer also assumes she’s using the branded light for the system (crappy cheapo lamp off eBay/amazon and random gel products = curing issue).

Sometimes I chip them the same day. It’s me.
I pay when I need them fixing.

@Gribbit987everything is provided by the owner of the salon. Not a cheap lamp from eBay.
All polish is from a good company.
Me thinks this person is complaining because niece is young then hoping to get it for free or a big discount.
At least 3 of the regular clients work in a factory and their nails don't chip not even when niece did them at home.

If they've chipped again, she's probably not looking after them properly. Ring pulls etc should be opened with a utensil, not your nails. Use washing up gloves, and so on, make sure you use cuticle oil. She has either been putting her hands in chemicals or doing something to cause them to chip, or she doesn't have suitable nails for gel and may need acrylics or something sturdier.

I had Biab done just before Christmas. Same lady I have been going to for years. Yet the very next day, the polish was already lifting around the edges and within a week, half of my nails were broken with the other half badly chipped.

Never had this issue before and she said neither had she. It can happen for reasons that no one knows.

Also, gel polish really shouldn’t be chipping or peeling within a few days. It’s not taking the piss to have paid for a service and for it to actually do its job.

You sound very over invested in every detail of your niece’s job.

I’m sure as a grown woman she can navigate these sorts of workplace issues for herself?

SchoolNightWine · 13/03/2026 20:58

Mine chip occasionally and I book in and pay £5 to have them repaired. It’s nothing to do with how they’ve been done, but everything to do with me not looking after them.
There’s a sign up at a salon I used to go to - “treat them like jewels, not tools”. I always think of this when I go to open a ring pull with them, then get a spoon instead!

Why on earth do women bother with these gel nails if they are so fragile you can't actually do anything without damaging them?

So many women walking round with horrible talon- like nails. Such a strange fashion.

You can do most things with them. I still do gardening and DIY with no bother.

Gel nails aren’t ‘talons’. Gel nails are simply nails with a special polish applied that is much stronger than ordinary polish and stays put for two or three weeks. Gel nails aren’t nail extensions (although you can have gel polish applied on top of extensions if you like).

Not that it matters, as women are perfectly entitled to have whatever nails they like.

Maddy70 · 14/03/2026 13:57

If they are chipped they should be repaired. Sometimesthe varnish doesn't cure properly. They are all slightly different. The shape also affects durability.

Imfat · 14/03/2026 15:16

Owner gently asked when it had chipped. It was when she was opening a ring pull can.
DN repaired it free of charge. Both DN and owner advised about the care of nails.
