Just don’t know if 2 year old needs checking over

How do you know if they’re dehydrated? She has a sickness bug picked up from her sister who brought it home from nursery. Her sister was being sick for about 6 hours, no temp and was then off food for a couple of days but pretty much back to her normal so self.
Dd2 has been being sick since 7am now, is sipping water but eventually it comes back up. Temp is up and down. She’s had maybe 2.5 ice lollies but point plank refusing squash, we’ve tried to do the fluid challenge with the squash. She’s had a few Pom bears and tried a chicken nugget but they came back up. She had one wet nappy all day, we just kept the same one on. She has had a new nappy on now about 3 hours but it feels dry. She is lethargic and just lying on dh doesn’t want to do anything. I know these things have to run their course but she’s still so little and I’m worried sick.

Should add - dh thinks because she is sipping water she won’t be dehydrated and therefore doesn’t need checking over. But I think that water is coming back up..

I would ring 111 for them to assess her over the phone.

What I was told when my 3 month old got gastroenteritis was do a sip (actually 5 ml, at 3 months) of rehydration fluids every 5 mins, by the clock. Yes some will come up. Some will go in. At the least even the bit coming up will protect the stomach lining. It was worrying but it worked.

But yes, a 111 call is a good idea.

notabingthing · 12/03/2026 00:04

She’s asleep on dh atm, and dh is also asleep. I’m ill myself aswell but not been sick yet.
When dh wakes I will tell him I’m calling 111

I would call 111. I was in the same position this morning with my 17 month old and we’re now admitted to hospital because his blood sugar was critically low and he was severely dehydrated. I almost didn’t call 111 because I thought it was something that could/should be managed at home but I’m very glad I did

Hope your little one is better soon

It is always best to get proper medical advice when kids are young because they can't articulate nor understand what is happening with their bodies and how they feel. Things can become tricky with them fast. Start taking observations and symptoms notes now so you are ready to answer questions and write out your questions and concerns. Create a time line, note medical history.

ChestnutSquash · 12/03/2026 02:41

Definitely call 111 and don't delay. Little ones can deteriorate fast.

FantasyFoodhall · 12/03/2026 03:21

Agree with calling for advice

Morning all, she hasn’t been sick now since about 2am so I’m hoping the sickness has stopped, she has kept calpol down too and her temp is back to normal. Fingers crossed that’s the worst part over with..
Now we need to concentrate on hydrating her. She has been sipping water pretty much constantly but she needs electrolytes

That’s good to hear it’s worrying when they’re little. You can use apple juice, diluted if needed, to help with electrolytes. Or do a fancy boiled up carrots water if you’re inclined!

DuchessofStaffordshire · 12/03/2026 08:47

Keep up with electrolytes and ice lollies. Jelly is also palatable and soothing rehydrator.
