BBC vote. Would you pay a subscription?

Inspired by the thread in AIBU regarding the public consultation.

Just a vote. I'm curious just to see the numbers.

If the government removed the licence fee and all bbc services moved to subscription only - like Netflix, sky etc, and this subscription was the same price as the current tv licence - would you subscribe?

You would not be able to view or listen to any BBC content without subscribing.

Subscription would be completely your choice and you would be free to watch other live tv eg itv etc without it. Just like if you dont have a sky account you can still watch channel 4.

No, I’ve been without my tv license for maybe 8 years now and haven’t missed life tv or iplayer at all.

I was forced to do this to get BBC news online, as I live in the US.

I decided to download another trustworthy (and free) app instead.

Please could you explain…… what is the thing you need to do to get BBC news online. And what is the free and trustworthy app you use?

Thanks! 🤗

Pistachiocake · 10/03/2026 20:59

I watch very little live TV, and the odd thing that I like would probably be available elesewhere if the licence fee went.

Do you get letters off them often ? I only cancelled mine in December and had a letter come through in Feb !

We haven’t paid for a licence fee for our whole marriage (26 years). Initially we just watched box sets and films, then (when it was allowed) we also started to watch stuff on BBC iplayer. When that stopped being allowed, we streamed stuff online instead, then we got Netflix when it became popular. Now we also watch Channel 4 catch up (I was even happy to pay £40 to skip the adverts). I’ve never been tempted to pay the licence fee as it’s so expensive - for years we were on the £5.99 pm Netflix option and there’s so much more to watch on there.

I don’t listen to BBC radio. I do look at the news website but I wouldn’t mind just getting my news elsewhere if I had to.

What @Nesbi said. Especially this…

The BBC can only exist as a UK asset if it has a large element of its funding protected. We can’t pretend it could survive as a purely commercial service because everything we know about the market tells us that is all but impossible.

As for The BBC doesn't do anything I'm interested in… how is this even possible, considering that there are a several TV channels, plus many national and lots of local radio stations. Personally I’d pay just to get Radios 3 and 4.

eta
Like@User122333 I value BBC Sounds and iPlayer, and a subscription for an on demand Archive would be welcome.

Also, if the BBC’s funding were to be cut it would no longer be able to provide the same quality and quantity of programmes. Which would be an open offer for the commercial networks to lower the quality of their output whilst increasing their charges.

Edited

Because there is nothing i watch on there? For me it’s all crap. I have not watched bbc 1-3 since they bbc3.
It would be better for subscription as i know a lot of people are fed up when they never watch the bbc and begrudge paying.
Atleast with disney, netflix you can
pay and suspend at any time.

"All the good shows that I have always liked (Only Fools and Horses, Red Dwarf, One Foot in the Grave, Fawlty Towers, Not Going Out, Birds of a Feather, Keeping up Appearances, Gavin & Stacey and so on,) I have on DVD too. So I could happily lose BBC altogether, and the iPlayer."

How do you think those shows were originally funded?

What kind of question is that? Everyone knows that! They were funded via the TV licence fee that everyone pays for, and always has paid for, including me. Then I PAID for the DVD box sets that I now own, and sometimes watch.

They are no longer on and most haven't been on for many years. And I don't watch ANYthing on BBC now, or listen to their radio, or podcasts or anything. So why the hell should I keep paying the licence fee?

BBC has fuck-all on that I am interested in now .. As I said, even Doctor Who that I used to like is shit now. It's been shit since Matt Smith left.

Also Not Going Out is still being made, but that's not as good as it used to be, so I don't care if I don't watch that again...

Exactly! A few posters on this thread seem to be struggling to comprehend the fact that some people don't watch - or listen to - ANYthing produced by or shown on the BBC. Not everyone is the same, and some people are really NOT interested in the stuff that the BBC churns out.

Is it that beyond the realms of believability that someone might have different opinions to you?!!! Open your mind!

It DOES need to be subscription only, (and no licence fee) but the BBC won't do that because they know they will lose shit loads of money, because many people won't subscribe! If they're so confident they are so wonderful, and everyone loves them and needs them, then why are they so afraid to go subscription only?!

HopSpringsEternal · 10/03/2026 21:58

I would pay but I love Radio 6, Radio 4, BBC sounds.
I also love Ghosts, Small Prophets, Traitors, the Olympics (fuck me watching the olympics abroad is depressing - 8000 matches of handball, fencing and if youre lucky some table tennis).
Loved Happy Valley and, Line of Duty. DD loves call the Midlife and Strictly.
DS is rewatching all of Blue Planet and all Attenboroughs stuff. DH and I love storyville.

Sure there is more. But would miss it greatly.

9021Pho · 10/03/2026 22:09

No. The BBC is institutionally antisemitic and makes life harder and more dangerous for British Jews.

Its news and current affairs programming is factually wrong.

It propagated gender ideology as if it were fact.

And it's entertainment output is low-brow dross.

Burn it to the ground as far as I'm concerned.

ALL the time. They also turned up once but we weren’t in. We fill in the ‘we don’t watch tv’ forms all the time too.

Ridiculous isn’t it ! You should be able to make your declaration like once a year or whatever and they have to leave you alone then. It’s just using fear tactics, the amount of people on this thread who’ve said they only pay because they’re scared of what happens if they don’t.

Freysimo · 11/03/2026 06:35

SpringsOnTheWay · 10/03/2026 16:07

Absolutely would. The license fee is remarkably good value for what you get

I would pay a subscription as I watch it, but I'm absolutely against the licence fee. Why should anyone who never watches BBC pay? It's wrong.

activetimeathime · 11/03/2026 06:41

I don’t watch anything on the BBC and I don’t listen to BBC radio. I think it’s disgusting I need to pay the fee to watch Coronation Street or GBBO.

Its always the same on these threads ,some posters are totally unable to comprehend that other ,s dont watch the BBC at all or have any interest in the radio
They then become very rude about it.

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 11/03/2026 08:48

There's a cost of living crisis.

Scrap the licence fee.

activetimeathime · 11/03/2026 09:29

Coming back on to say I watch strictly so I would subscribe September to December but that’s it. I don’t watch or listen to the BBC any other time.

Fends · 11/03/2026 09:48

Zov · 10/03/2026 16:17

No, I wouldn't pay a subscription, but I think there should BE a subscription! I would love to see how many people actually join/pay the sub. I bet it's not many. It would soon reduce the silly salaries some of them have! The only thing I watch on BBC is Doctor Who, and it's shit now anyway, so I only watch the ones with Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and Matt Smith. And I have them on DVD.

All the good shows that I have always liked (Only Fools and Horses, Red Dwarf, One Foot in the Grave, Fawlty Towers, Not Going Out, Birds of a Feather, Keeping up Appearances, Gavin & Stacey and so on,) I have on DVD too. So I could happily lose BBC altogether, and the iPlayer. I also never listen to BBC radio, and I don't like podcasts, and never listen to them....

So I really resent paying the licence fee. I am too chicken shit to stop paying though in case I get into trouble. Shame we don't have the nerve to ALL cancel our direct debits and stop paying, and make say May, (this year) the month we all do it. Then the BBC can introduce a subscription, and people can join if they want, and pay for it monthly, with no contract.

If we all stop paying at once, they can't fine 10s of millions of people and send us all to prison! Especially at the same time LOL!!!

As a few posters have said, having a Netflix style subscription (with no contract) where people can join for just a couple of months and then dip out for a couple of months, and then dip back in again, would be a good idea, as more people will probably join and pay it at least sometimes. I wouldn't bother - ever - but some would, probably...

.

Edited

It’s extremely good value so why would we all want to refuse to pay just because you can’t manage yourself properly? If you don’t want it then cancel it

CraftandGlamour · 11/03/2026 09:58

I would be very happy for the BBC to go to subscription. I rarely watch their channels as it is and object to being forced to pay for their services.

You’re not forced to

Pemba · 11/03/2026 10:37

It puzzles me how supporters of the current licence fee always trot out that the licence fee is 'very good value for money'. It's not good value to a person who seldom or never watches BBC stuff, is it? Especially if they're on a tight budget, as many people are at the moment. To them, it's an enforced waste of money.

Also, good value in comparison to what? I mean you could say Asda is good value in comparison to Waitrose, but there is no other 'BBC' type organisation charging an annual fee in the UK. There's nothing to compare it to. Therfore the statement is just meaningless.

MrThorpeHazell · 11/03/2026 11:44

Yes. It is the only sane way to fund the BBC IMO.

Thereissnowinmywellies · 11/03/2026 13:02

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 10/03/2026 15:55

No.

The BBC doesn't do anything I'm interested in, hence why I object to being expected to fund it even though I do not use it.

If it changed to subs only I still wouldn't have any interest.

Not bothered about BBC either, I not really fussed about television in any format and don't subscribe to any channels, I prefer to watch dvds nearly old skool but so what? 🙂

Papyrophile · 11/03/2026 14:47

I don't watch very much TV on any channel, but the BBC is exceptional value when compared to Sky, which we originally got for the sports. Now it's almost only football, so we have other subs for cricket and rugby, plus Netflix. I have AMazon Prime, but mostly for free delivery. We shall probably cancel Sky altogether very soon. Happy to pay for the Beeb, either by license or subscription.

Sprawling · 11/03/2026 14:49

I'm outside the UK and would have to have the option of being able to access the iPlayer for a fee.
