Would you want to be filmed 24/7 whilst in hospital?

Lampard Inquiry: 'Grave concerns' about Oxevision monitoring system - BBC News https://share.google/ABJkNX7n1LQaCzEhp

Apparently this system is being used in mental health units and patients are not even being told in some cases.

Will it be rolled out into general hospitals? What could possibly go wrong?!

I would once have said no. But having read about sexual assault and nurses abusing patients in a hospital-and seeing for myself how people are treated- I think it would be a good thing.
And I have some lovely friends who work in the NHS, and know most of the staff are amazing, but that won't help you when you have the abusive nurses on your ward.

Noorandapples · 09/03/2026 16:18

No I wouldn't, but I can see why mental health units would want that for preventing self harm. Having said that, informed consent is necessary and most people would probably say no thanks, and that should be respected.

The video I watched about it said it can increase feelings of paranoia. Personally, I would hate to be monitored in this way. What about data leaks too?

It's awful that we're even having to think about this.

Well just like what @Pistachiocake says I would want it for personal protection.
I was sexually assaulted by a consultant- I went through hell because of that man. It wasn’t a mental institution btw it was a supposed routine check on my child.
But behind closed doors where they know what they can get away with.
Having said that there are of course the usual privacy concerns about toileting, showers, changing those who are incontinent so I fully recognise it’s not a straightforward issue.
Maybe a better measure would be body worn cameras but I suppose that would also engender the same privacy issues.

I’d like to say it’s rare that sexual assaults by clinical staff are rare but it can’t be that rare if the NHS spent £8.8 million in legal costs and compensation for sexual based misconduct claims from 2015-2024.

that also doesn’t factor in other abuse which is probably more rife.

And for the many many great NHS staff it offers protection if they get assaulted.

Perhaps they could do it so it starts recording automatically when someone walks through the door/curtain, but you have privacy when on your own

@applescentedcandle
Thats a really good idea!

cctv wouldn’t bother me.

I worked on psych wards and would have welcomed this - firstly in case of bad acting by staff. But also, and more commonly, because of false allegations by patients. Seems that it protects everyone.

Itsmetheflamingo · 09/03/2026 17:07

This is a difficult one because the article and its use to date presents a legitimate reasoning- someone detained off their safety who needs constant monitoring. We are not going to be able to employ humans to do this so technology is the obvious answer. If appears to have failed through user error (being turned off, basically)

however the article doesn’t suggest it will be rolled out where constant monitoring isn’t necessary- and I think you made a leap there that isn’t realistic.

why would it do that when it’s whole purpose is to stop people being alone? It’s for people who need to be monitored
