What are my rights? (If any)

Electricity went off last night (for at least our entire street) - only discovered when my alarm didn't go off this morning. Went on the National Grid website to be told it was reported at 22:49 last night and would be sorted between 12:30-13:30 today. They also rang me this morning to check I'm ok.

I WFH but my mum lives round the corner so have come here to use her electricity. Got a text to say power had been restored around 12:15 so packed up and went back home... plugged in my phone and turned the oven on to cook some lunch... nothing. Back on the NG website to say there's been ANOTHER power cut and they don't know what time it will be sorted. Bought a sandwich from the corner shop for lunch and back to my mum's (she's away so nothing stocked up)

However, I'll be finishing work soon and face going home to a house without electric (I have pets to see to) - I don't have any solar powered battery packs, etc. and so will literally be sat in the dark with my kindle (not to mention no hot water). I also don't know what I'll eat without power - yes I realise I'd be a useless prepper.

Do I have any rights in terms of compensation etc. given how long this has gone on for? There are local gas pipe works everywhere at the moment so suspect something's gone wrong with them. I'm just thankful I put off doing the big shop until today and so there's nothing too expensive in the freezer!

As pp have said, you get compensation in certain conditions but money doesn't really make up for this. You're incredibly lucky to have your mum's house available as a backup. It happened to my town for 72 hours a few years ago with the outside temperature below freezing, and we were all affected, and the businesses who might have helped all closed.
Power cuts will happen again, with the effects of global warming being more and more evident, so maybe take this as a cue to stock up on batteries, candles, blankets, camping stove etc.
Hope it comes back soon.

@janietreemore This is definitely to do with the ongoing gas works rather than anything else. I would have had to go and work from my nearest office if I didn't have my mums to come to. I do have plenty of candles, blankets, and batteries, but little in the way of battery-operated anything!
