A very good friend is moving back to Tokyo for their postgraduate studies.

What's a good gift to give to them?

And yes they are Japanese.

Something small to remember that time in the UK, something to remember a certain location where they live or somewhere they visited a lot.

When I moved countries, some people were a bit miffed that I didn't want any big leaving gifts like ornaments, furniture, accessories. I ask for a specific book from my previous colleague because I love the subject and the author and every time I look at the book on my bookshelf now I remember my work with them.

When a friend moved abroad I got them a voucher for a well-respected spa in the city, so they could have a relaxation day after a stressful international move.

They didn't want more 'stuff' to take with them, so worked well.

Thanks both for the suggestions.

I did a photo album of pictures and messages from friends when my friend emigrated. Not a big item when they were taking plenty of luggage anyway.

I'd get her something she'll be able to use in the city she's moving to, like a voucher for a coffee shop nearby or one of the local shop chains, etc.
Maybe an online subscription to courses related to her studies or something else that she'll be happy to use? My friend gifted me a subscription to online fitness marathons because I couldn't get to the gym at that time and was upset about it.

Something that would remind her of her home/place she grew up at would be nice as well. You can make a small desk calendar with photos of the city you're both currently in, maybe photos of you two or pictures of her, etc. It'll be easy to transport and it won't take much place. Not everyone uses printed calendars, but a smaller desk one isn't a burden and you don't have to think of hanging it and not ruining the walls.
