Light hearted, please don’t get ranty. I’m not interested enough to argue.

Have you ever seen a more middle class gift for a middle class child in a toy shop than this? Made me chuckle…

What the heck's wrong with Stick Man??

Walkthelakes · 08/03/2026 20:21

it feels very earnest. I sit next to a woman at swimming lessons who is obviously much posher than me and I love ear wigging her conversations. After Christmas she was explaining to someone that her kids only get one present for Christmas. They've just been cramming for entrance exams for grammar.private. She perfectly nice but I look forward to swimming to see what they'll be talking about this time. I think she'd buy that book.

HoppityBun · 08/03/2026 20:25

Because the workings classes have no interest in the natural world? The children I know, and one girl in particular, who like ponds and bugs would love this. Single parent family, mother a part time TA. Not middle class. They don’t even like hummus!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 08/03/2026 20:27

Its good, but not quite a wooden set of macaroons play set.

Tigerbalmshark · 08/03/2026 20:27

I reckon DS would flick through that. I wouldn’t really call it a gift though? We get through a lot of books (mostly library), they don’t all have to be winners.

I bet ikea sells those!

menopausalmare · 08/03/2026 20:29

Why is lichen middle class? It grows on any North -facing wall, it's not fussed.

Haha DS has that one, it is excellent 🤣🤣

YYY to this!

Why does every single tiny little thing relate back to class in the UK?

What on earth is lichen

Crusty stuff that grows on trees, rocks & other surfaces, often in areas with low air pollution and/or high rainfall. Reindeer eat it.

Niceonerum · 08/03/2026 20:44

my Brother has autism and would get obsessed with random things he probably would have loved this.

As for middle class I’m informed our family didn’t even make the cut for working class as our mother was on benefits and didn’t work

You can get books like this for 25p from charity shops.

sleeppleasesoon · 08/03/2026 20:45

It’s quite a niche topic.

Ive given up giving any books as gifts to certain people. They see it as an insult. Why give a book when there’s perfectly good tat in B&M to be had…..

Dobequiet · 08/03/2026 20:49

We live rurally and spend a lot of time outdoors. Dgc would probably enjoy it (if we are judging a book by its cover).

I’m sure from my name you can guess what I am, raised very working class , grew up with very little. The natural
world is there for everyone.
Lichen is such an important part of the environment, great book for kids to read.

Definitelyrandom · 08/03/2026 21:54

This attitude explains why many of the working classes today aren't interested in educating themselves. Back in the first half of the last century in particular, many people who were working class listened to classical music, went to evening classes and didn't think it was weird to read up on a wide variety of topics. If this were still the case there'd be a lot more social mobility.

It’s in a toy shop window.

im not sure this post has any link at all to whatever point you’re trying to make.

I don’t think post is symbolic of the reason why the working classes don’t go to classical music evenings.

it’s not that deep friend.

I know people like that. The idea of getting their kid a Nintendo or anything fun to open on Christmas morning would be an anathema. Only one singular (educational) present and a pair of hiking socks.

Can’t single parent families be middle class?

Actually this struck me because I was recently clearing out my parents house and found a notebook from the early 1930's recording information about the ballets my grandparents had attended whilst courting and living in London. I barely remember them but they were thoroughly working class - certainly DGF was born into absolute poverty, later becoming a postman and they lived in a council house until they died. My DF had mentioned in passing that GDF used to do etchings but I had no idea they loved ballet.

Disclaimer - I have just ordered the book for DS because I think he will like it so am obviously middle class now. TBF I am an accountant and own my own home, which I think would have blown my grandparents minds.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 09/03/2026 00:23

The real question is, does one pronounce it to sound like LITCHen or LIKEn? I've heard both!
