Sunday afternoon accountability thread

My house is a tip, and it's getting me down so I really need to get it sorted. However, I have adhd and I can procrastinate for England! Blush

I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the scale of the task and I'm struggling to get myself mobilised. I know I just need to start somewhere and get on with it, but it's hard. I could do with some accountability if anyone wants to join me?

Hi @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack i have the same problem. I find doing a little bit each time does help. One cupboard or shelf each time.

Thanks. I know you're right. I find it quite hard to disaggregate the tasks into smaller chunks...I just see one big mess and it feels overwhelming!

@MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack maybe try and tidy around the bed/your chair? Or clear down a worktop? Little steps x

Get some washing on an hour cycle, then start with getting all the dirty dishes done or dishwasher on.
After that clear the floors by putting stuff in the room they belong eg living room stuff on the sofa, your stuff on your bed.
Hoover/sweep and mop
Pack things away
clean bath/shower/sinks/toilets
extra points if you can dust Wink
You could do half that list before the washing machine is done and the other half after and be done and smug before tea time!

same. only its the laundry calling to me from my wash basket.. needs doing.

As a fellow ADHD'er, can i suggest you challenge yourself to pick up all the rubbish/trash that you can in a 5 minute session?

Then spend 5 minutes locating all the crocks/glasses/dishes mugs.

5 Minutes on picking up any laundry and putting it in the baskets/by the washing machine.

You'll be surprised how quickly it makes things look a little better.

I set myself a timer and try and get it all done before it goes off.

I have that same problem today (and have ND dc, and can recognise that I likely have autism & adhd traits too).

I have started with the most visible bit first. What that means for me, is the kitchen extension (which has dining table and sofa. / chairs in), as well as the kitchen sides. So I move all of the dirty dishes etc into the utility room, and clear the sides as much as possible, and straighten the cushions, so there is no visible clutter. I am also doing the washing today, so in between loads (and folding clothes), I am going to tackle the utility room (which has mountains of dishes as I have had lots on the last day or so and it has mounted up.

To help me do that, I am going to get a nice drink (my go-to at the moment is sparkling water with some cordial in), and power up my iPad, and watch something quite mindless on bbc iPlayer while I do. Having not watched silent witness for about 15 years, I started watching the more recent episodes recently, so am using it as my housework ‘treat’ (as it is not something dh would want to watch with me). I also like to watch documentaries and comedy panel game shows while doing the worst housework, as you don’t have to be looking at the screen all the time. I even have a shelf with a lip above the dishwasher, where my iPad sits!!

Could I join in please? I want to get 10 things listed on Vinted

Stoufer · 08/03/2026 13:36

Just seen a pp, yes - I have a 15 min sand timer that my dh bought for just that reason. 15 mins is just about okay to commit to doing something and you can actually get a lot done!

Gosh, thank you! Lots of tips here.

So, I think the gameplay is as follows:

  1. Stick a load of washing on
  2. Collect as much rubbish and reycling as I can find and get it out of the house
  3. Put away clean laundry
  4. Clear kitchen surfaces
  5. Wipe kitchen surfaces
  6. Hoover sitting room
  7. Mop kitchen floor

There is loads more that I could do, but if I can get through the above, that would make a big difference.

I have a little timer that I can just flip to get started, so I will try to break it into 10 minute chunks!

Good luck to everyone else who is trying to get on with stuff. I will report back on progress by around 3.15pm!

Forgot to come back but I'm doing ok so far. Just the hoovering and the mopping left to go now, but having a bit of a break first.

Well, i finished everything on the list. The house is still a mess but better than it was, so that's a win, I guess! Thanks to all for the support earlier.

Well done @MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack

I haven’t read all of the comments but wondered if anyone has mentioned body doubling? I really struggle to get motivated and this concept was like a light bulb moment for me! Well done on having a productive afternoon
