Weird side effects of getting older

Already gone through menopause. That was fun. Hot flushes, dry vag, shrinking lady bits, lack of libido.

But a new effect of being old is starting to hit. As always, I thought it was just me, but when I searched online, it's a recognised feature of ageing.

Response to the cold. I don't shiver anymore. I don't really even know I'm getting cold. The first thing I notice is my hands being cold. And then I realise my body is very cool. Good old Google says this is a known effect of ageing. It's how elderly people succumb to hypothermia. Their core temperature drops without them even realising.

And I think I'm getting this. I notice my hands being cold. Recognise my whole body is cooler than is comfortable and try to warm myself up (heating up or heated throw etc) and it takes a good half an hour to improve.

So take this as a PSA (public service announcement). Not only will you shrivel and dry up in the nether regions, you'll also be at risk of dying from hypothermia without really even noticing! Bloody ace.

I asked on my phone, it says 71 percent of women do apparently. Sounds awful shrively bits.
Nevermind I am going to make a nice cup of tea, and forget about it.

TheBlueKoala · 09/03/2026 10:22

Ah. Well, I have been old for a long time then only feet and hands are cold. I saw a cardiologist who explained this once but I can't remember. Memory is failing, brain fog, my eyes are runny, night sweats but still period (heavy so low on iron), I'm dry all over even my eyebrows got fucking dandruff. I'm "only" 46 so nice to know I got more surprises in store🤣

Sannabay · 09/03/2026 10:28

I did the menopause naturally. It was tough but you do come out the other end, feeling like a Victor!

It's a rite of passage, enjoy it.
We did puberty -remember those horrid stories.
We did pregnancy and birth, remember those tales told
You get the picture. :)
One day at a time. X

I always had cold hands and feet as a child, school uniform policy was very strict 50s to early 60s.. white socks, gabardine coat,no gloves, were not warm. We had ice on the inside of our last house windows,1930s cottage.. just a gas fire in the sitting room. My neighbours ranging from 50/70 have their heating on around 23c but they walk about in t shirts.

Dontcallmescarface · 09/03/2026 10:34

Never mind not feeling the cold, I'm still waiting for the hair thinning that is supposed to happen during menopause.....25 years on and I'm still looking like Crystal Tipps' Nanna.

On the subject of LBodi...when I 'became a woman .' my ma presented me with the ghastliest special belt.
If you know what I'm talking about you know. Yikes+some!

My mother (who had me after a long gap from my other sibs and was an older mum, quite possibly unintentionally…) was all set to chemist and get me a belt and some pads. But I had been reading Valentine and Mirabelle magazines (remember them?) and knew all about stick-on Libresse (remember them?😂) so managed to avoid having to wrangle nappy-size towels. Tampons were a bridge too far at the start!

That liberty bodice brought back memories too…

I'm 58 and periods have been stop/start for 3 years. I thought id more or less finished meno (no period for months) but then had a random period at xmas with the sore boobs before it and everything 🙄 so a bit confused on that front ...

However ! I wanted to say that i've been a 'freeze arse' since my 20s. I like it hot, i hate being cold. My hands and feet and nose always get cold easily and a cold nose triggers sinus pain. I can't stand getting into a cold sea and i adore the hot hot sun. At acupuncture years ago the guy told me i must 'never get cold'.

Night time - i get hot and cold all night and have done for years.

The first rapid aging age - 44 - i gave birth to DC no.4 ! 🤣 So certainly felt pretty knackered for a couple of years.

Hitting 50 i noticed my hands looking a bit craggy. Neck a bit wobbly.

So 58 now and sex drive a little lower than in my 40s but still at it with DH 2/3 times a week. No shrinkage in the nethers. !!! ? No dryness.

I guess i've got all this to come soon! Fabulous!

Last 3 years i've been doing daily yoga. I'm determined to be able to carry on sitting on the floor cross legged happily with the grand kids (who are starting to appear from my older DDs 😍) for many years more to come. My eldest DDs MIL is only a year older than me and can't get down on the floor or step over the bar into the baby pen or get into the ball pit and sod about at soft play - she just seems to have embraced being old!

No!! Fight it all the way i say!

"You're as old as the man you feel Honey".. I've never gone off sex.. I'm sure having a regular sex life stopped vaginal dryness..

If it's good for you, that's fine. Personally, I really couldn't be arsed.

Happyjoe · 09/03/2026 11:07

Am still going through the menopause so running hot but I've noticed this winter when out, I don't just get cold, I get painfully cold. It's like I cannot regulate my temps. It's been so odd and more than a little disconcerting.

Hope don't mind me saying, any random bleeding at your age should be checked out. Worth a trip to the doc?

Think yourself lucky! My hair has thinned so much I feel a temp difference on the top of my head!

To be fair, hair products were pretty basic back in the day - I remember shampoo for 'dry, normal or oily' hair, with conditioner being thought of with some suspicion because 'they were just trying to sell you something' - everyone's hair was a bit Crystal Tipps after the weekly Sunday night hair wash... (who can remember their mothers mercilessly dragging a comb through it while you shed hot tears of pain?)

My hair has suffered badly post menopause so I also look just like Crystal Tipps! Conditioner and anti-frizz doesn't help much and to make it worse I decided to embrace the grey so am now sporting a few inches of salt and pepper roots in auburn coloured hair - I really shouldn't be allowed out.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 09/03/2026 14:21

I don't mind you saying, and i did get checked out thank you 👍 All ok, late surge. While it was weirdly interesting having all the ovulation symptoms again (wildly horny, sore nips and EWM ect) i don't want anymore late surges please and thank you. The tummy cramps and the sheer mess and misery of it all reminded me in some respects im happy to be 'past it' 🤪

Gotback · 09/03/2026 15:03

I'm 65 and suddenly, well in the last year, can no longer drink coffee or eat eggs and have become allergic to hair dye. And I particularly did not want to go grey gracefully.

Nannyfannybanny · 10/03/2026 13:23

Gotback,grey blending is your friend

MonsteraDeliciosa · 10/03/2026 14:18

Second swift ageing surge? Smurfism?

Bloody hell this is depressing. I had thought I’d aged a bit recently (57), particularly with scragginess of neck, but didn’t realise my body was trying to do me in by fast-tracking it! Pah.

damelza · 10/03/2026 17:50

Apart from greying hair and a total unwillingness to tolerate being patronised and gaslit by (mainly) the medical profession, I'm doing ok at 68. Never had or needed HRT, still have all my teeth, and can walk briskly every day. I don't take the car to the supermarket anymore as I was buying too much shite, so I bought a backpack on wheels, and if it doesn't fit in there, it's not bought! I get a few kms in walking there and back too.

I'm not saying I'm perfect, I am quick to lose my rag and am intolerant of fools, as I was one myself in the past ha so I know what they are like!

I've a few chronic things that are well controlled, but I would have got them when younger so it's not an age thing.

I suppose I'm a full on grumpy old woman, but full of fun with the right people. Grey hair doing my head in haha, too lazy to get it coloured or do it myself either. I absolutely hate hate hate the hairdresser ritual. I can't hear the small talk with age related partial deafness, but they forget about that after five seconds and think I'm just bloody rude if I don't respond with some made up holiday or other!

So onwards and upwards to the departure lounge I suppose, but I sure hope that flight to heaven is delayed for a long long time!
