Can you give me some recommendations for audiobooks?

I’ve started listening to podcasts and audiobooks on my drive to work and have a few audible credits to use and need some recommendations. I’m really trying to get to grips with my finances this year and enjoyed listening to How to Fund the Life you Want.

I’ve also recently given up alcohol, and although I don’t particularly want any sober quit lit books (as I’ve listened to a lot already), I have enjoyed the Let Them Theory and Atomic Habits so along the lines of self help/wellness?

Any recommendations for any audiobooks along these lines? Or maybe something completely different I haven’t considered? Planning to get a few books on audible to use up my credits and then pause my membership while I take some time listening to them.

I would recommend Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Is probably the best audiobook I have listened to. I am not usually a sci fi fan but I loved this

I enjoyed:

4000 weeks
Wintering
The Unthethered soul
Die with zero
The psychology of Money
The power of Habit

Also Elton John autobiography, Ozzy Osborne autobiography, Matthew Perry’s autobiography Matthew Mccaughney’s autobiography and Demi Moore all touch on sobriety in a positive way and I got some identification.

None of this is true - Lisa jewel best audiobook I’ve ever listened to.

self help wise - atomic habits is good on audio, also Brett Larkin new book on somatic yoga is really good as audio

For self improvement I found the Year of less interesting and it made me think about my own lifestyle. However, I’m not sure I’d listen to it more than once so if you can get it via Libby or Borrow Box I’d go that route.

For fiction I second Project Hail Mary. I’m not usually one for sci fi, but I really enjoyed and have listened to it twice in the last year.

The nanny state made me by Stuart Maconie is a good listen (I’ve also enjoyed Pies and Prejudice and The Full English by him).

Brick Lane by Monica Ali - narrated by Meera Syal - I just found it so engaging.

Always check out the sample before buying; annoying narrators can ruin an audiobook. Authors who think they can read their own work are dreadful for this: think Lemony Snickett instead of the peerless Tim Curry; Helen Fielding instead of Tracy Bennett; Geraldine Brooks. Worst of all Donna Tartt who reads “Secret History” which has a young male narrator and she can’t read any way.FFS.
Oh, and Ted Hughes.

Rant over.

Julian Clary’s reading of his own “Briefs Encountered” is very good.
Anything by Alan Bennett.
The “Lucia” novels by EF Bennett
”Paper Boy” by Christopher Fowler
Jeeves and Wooster stories narrated by Stephen Fry
Stephen King has been fortunate in his audiobook narrators, but fuck me the extended version of “The Stand” has a horribly racist bit in it and the casual sexism is jarring (and I don’t mean attitudes of the characters).

Another vote for Project Hail Mary (from another person who doesn’t like sci-fi).

I’ve just finished and thoroughly enjoyed All The Colours of the Dark by Chris Whitaker, and before that it was Broken Country by Claire Leslie Hall.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 07/03/2026 22:41

Oh, and The Martian is another I wasn’t sure I’d like, but loved.

Thanks these are all great recommendations. I’ve downloaded The Year of Less, it sounds just like the sort of book I would enjoy so I plan to listen to that next. And will definitely give Project Hail Mary a go as lots of you are recommending it, even though it’s not something I would usually pick.

And thanks for the reminder about the library apps, I have meant to check those out but keep forgetting about them so think I’ll just cancel my audible subscription once I use up my last credits and see how I get on with that instead.

Came on to say this too. The audiobook is so good.

The Rivers of London series narrated by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is absolutely brilliant if you like realistic fantasy.

For relaxation, anything read by Stephen Fry, who has the perfect voice to unwind to - his narration of the Sherlock Holmes books is excellent.

The narrator can make or break a book, so listen to a sample before you commit.

OddBoots · 08/03/2026 14:29

I have just come to This is for Everyone by Tim Berners-Lee (Narrated by Stephen Fry, actually) on Borrow Box -but I know different areas have different things on their library apps - and found it really interesting and ends on a hopeful note.
