Do you know the names of your great grandparents

I saw something on X the other day asking this and it made me wonder.

I can’t tell you their government names, but I know the names my parents refer to them by (skinny grandad, grandad with the hat, farmer grandad, mean Nana who used to tell my dad off when he was a little shit, nice Nana who enabled him being a little shit, and Welsh grandma). I know a decent bit about each of them, including the fact that farmer grandad looked spookily like Morrisey when he was younger (I’ve seen a photo, he really did). I don’t know about one set of my mums grandparents, but I know a decent bit about the rest.

It just made me think about if anyone will remember me or if I’ll be referred to as “Nana (insert description)” hopefully not mean Nana, I think she got a raw deal with that. Imagine my dad was a proper little terror back in the day, but he claims it was unfair persecution.

Yes I can, but lots were alive when I was born. I could tell you the name of my great great grandparents and go back quite far on my mums side.

Monolithique · 07/03/2026 10:06

No idea of their names , no. A couple were alive when I was a child.

Dh's great nan had the same name as his nan, so I know her name.

Loopylalalou · 07/03/2026 10:08

I can go back to 1567 in my maternal line. Thwarted in paternal due to Anglo Irish confusion.
It’s really easy to patch it all together by being certain of your parents details and using Ancestry and the like.

Interesting question...
I can name 5 out of 8 off the top of my head. I've probably been told the names of the other 3 but have forgotten.
I only ever met one of them (as a very young child), the others died before I was born.

Fifthtimelucky · 07/03/2026 10:28

Mine were all dead long before I was born (they were born in the 1850s-60). I can name all four on my mother’s side. On my father’s side I knew two, but had to remind myself of the other two

MrsHaroldWilson · 07/03/2026 10:29

Yes, though only two were alive when I was born, and one of those died when I was a baby so I only actually knew one. One of my great grandfathers was killed in WW1 and I've done a little research about his war history. The great grandfather I knew also fought in WW1 but would never talk about it. I was only about six when he died. A Victorian photograph exists of one of my great-great grandfathers, who owned a small shop!

WhatAPavalova · 07/03/2026 10:34

No, I know a few details about them but can’t remember their names. It brings home to me how quickly I will be completely forgotten!

KoalaBlue1 · 07/03/2026 10:35

I know them all now after doing a dna test
i wish I had asked my grandparents more.
There is more to their life than Date of birth - Date of death

MaidOfSteel · 07/03/2026 10:37

Yes. I know full names, dates & places of birth etc. Even the criminal record of a maternal great grandad! I spend loads of time researching my family history, though!

Sadly, only 2 of the 8 were still alive when I was born. I met one but not the other.

RedToothBrush · 07/03/2026 10:37

I can tell you the names of my X3 times great grandparents. And know most of my X4. I'm a nerd.

Rituelec · 07/03/2026 10:39

I only met 1 but she died when I was 4. I think.

My eldest children still have their great nan and they are 20 and 21

nam3c4ang3 · 07/03/2026 10:42

I don’t know what a government name is 😵‍💫

JassyRadlett · 07/03/2026 10:43

Yes, and I was lucky enough to know three of them.

I know the names of their parents as well, and going back further we've got written records for all sides going back to when different branches of the family left Europe for Australia, mostly in the 19th century. The shipping/landing records make it easier to keep track. That side, the idea of where we come from has always been really important in my family - maybe a result of being in a country where almost everyone has ancestry somewhere else.

tedibear · 07/03/2026 10:43

Most were all dead when I was born. Only the one I knew, she was Margaret born 1912. I only remember that as it’s the year the titanic sunk. She was the loveliest granny. (My other grandparents were called gran and nana to differentiate).

DisplayPurposesOnly · 07/03/2026 10:43

I only know the names of my great grandparents bc of family history research.

They were long gone (as were both of my biological grandfathers) before I was born.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/03/2026 10:44

My mum’s mum, Daisy and Sidney. Mum’s dad Francis (I think!) and Louise. Don’t know dad’s side.

Notmymarmosets · 07/03/2026 10:44

I met one as a baby apparently all the rest had died. I know none of their names. Thats how quickly we are forgotten.

PermanentTemporary · 07/03/2026 10:46

Can name my mum’s grandparents but would need to look up my dad’s. I have the info somewhere though. My family rushes into print at any opportunity so I know quite a lot about how they lived which is fun. Ish.

IceBrownie · 07/03/2026 10:47

Maternal: Maria & Pedro

Paternal: Maria & António

Both my grandmothers were called Maria too.

Guess my DD's name!

BauhausOfEliott · 07/03/2026 10:47

They all died before I was born but know six out of eight names.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/03/2026 10:48

They were all dead when I was born. Daisy was illegitimate. Sidney left school at 12 came to London became a tally man. Louise born in Metz was daughter of hoteliers, Francis born in England was direct French blood (his dad) and they were sort of in service to nobility. He was personal staff (close) to Count Mettinick in Germany where family moved to from Luxembourg.

Notmymarmosets · 07/03/2026 10:44

I met one as a baby apparently all the rest had died. I know none of their names. Thats how quickly we are forgotten.

Luckily my family knew the names, told us about them and wrote names on backs of photos.

BestZebbie · 07/03/2026 10:49

I only knew one in person but was always told the surnames of the others and the odd fact as I was growing up ("Granny and Grandad Jones" etc) so I was aware of them. Like the previous poster, I now have a family tree on Ancestry/Findmypast that goes back through the 1600s for the English branches.

MrsAvocet · 07/03/2026 10:49

Yes, though I never met any of them. In fact I only remember one of my grandparents as 2 died before I was born and one when I was a baby. But my parents spoke about their parents and grandparents often so I knew quite a bit about them. More recently I've built a family tree on Ancestry so I know names of ancestors a lot further back.

Mumofteenandtween · 07/03/2026 10:49

I know one as I was named after them! And her husband. I did know all of them but I’m 46 and my memory is not what it was! Oooh my paternal grandmother’s mother was Alice - I have just remembered!

I know both my grandmothers’ maiden names so I guess I know all the surnames.
