Large Fibroid - what’s likely?

Ultrasound today. Said I had a large fibroid. My periods are erratic but not super heavy, I do get tummy pain which I thought was IBS, might still be. Am bloated which I hate. Am 49. What do you think they will do?

I had a few fibroids a few years ago. Had coil fitted as doctors said would help with bleeding. Ended up having two coils both fell out turns out I should never have had a coil because of the fibroids. This why they kept falling out. I bled for a year sometimes it was very heavy. Doctors decided to remove the fibroids and gave me the coil under general anaesthetic. Not had a problems since!!!

That sounds like quite the battle! I won’t let them give me the coil then.

I had a melon-sized fibroid removed with a myomectomy, it was causing very heavy and prolonged periods, and I was in my 30s and wanted to get pg. If it isnt causing issues they may not see a need to remove it.

They do shrink after menopause, mine was over 12 cm - the position of it meant surgery would have been difficult but I was offered of surgery, Mirena coil or tranexamic acid. I was very symptomatic with flooding and pain but I opted for tranexamic acid which helped a lot. then after about 5 years of symptoms, everything stopped so must have shrunk.

They might offer you a uterine fibroid embolization..I had one. But it depends so much on position, symptoms etc

Doggymummar · 06/03/2026 19:57

Mine were measured at 5cm and I was on wait list for hysterectomy my name came up about ten weeks later and they said they had shrunk to nothing.

I also have a Rectocele prolapse and I wonder if the fibroid is contributing towards that.

It very much depends on the type and position. I have very big ones (4, the biggest 11cm) and not being inside the uterus but in the uterine wall, they are just a bit uncomfortable. Now calcified (not growing) in peri, I was offered hysterectomy but decided to let them be

Ming prolapsed causing severe anaemia, having it removed has been life changing. The ting is it wasn’t causing issues until it was, and then I took too long to be seen thinking it was the start of menopause.

id honestly say that thing stole 18 months of my life, so any issues aged get back to the drs asap.

funnily I also had two failed could.

I'd had heavy bleeding, pressure of fibroid impacted on my bowels, bladder, constant twitching in legs and ignored by NHS who said all fine. I went to give blood and they refused as my blood count was very low. Had private health, paid and got to see the female consultant I was actually under with the NHS but had never seen and turned out that the one fibroid was the whole of my uterus, getting bigger and hence issues with blood loss, but had never been told any of this! Operation to remove turned into hysterectomy as it had junked the area it was in and I was back at work in a month, realising how awful I had felt for a decade and overcompensated trying to keep fit! Destroyed my chances of a family due to NHS apathy to women's health. Moral, fight for proper health care and do not put up with being fobbed off.

I had fibroids for years however with growth the largest one was lower and caused bleeding for weeks on end due to resting on my coil. I had 4 resection surgeries including one under a general where I had a significant adverse reaction. After 4th resection they’ve removed all the large problematic ones and I’ve been fine ever since.

swingingbytheseat · 06/03/2026 22:04

I got mine removed because it was bleeding all the time. I paid for it on my credit card as I wanted it done immediately, I was getting anemic. It cost £4k. I’ll give you my gynae if you DM me. Just edited to add, it’s a simple operation but needs to be done in hospital setting due to risk of blood loss. You will probably be In and out in day ❤️❤️❤️
