What are your cheap extravagances

On the back of the thread about extravagances, I thought I would start one for cherish things that feel like treats. I am on a big money diet at the moment cause I’ve lost some contracts, so I’m really trying to do things to help me feel ok. Disclaimer, I don’t think there is anything wrong with extravagant treats, life is for living.

Anyway, here goes:

Superdrug shower gels, they quite often do limited edition ones. I particularly like Pumpkin Spice and Pear Crumble.

Books for my Kindle from Amazon, quite often only 99p.

Hair dye and lipstick from an Afro-Caribbean shop near me. I’m very happy dying my own hair for £2.99 a month. Lipsticks are also very reasonable and I prefer the colours.

Crochet, wool and a hook don’t cost much. Thrrres loads of tutorials on YouTube.

Duolingo. That’s not really cheap cause it costs me £89.99 a year, but not too bad

Morrisons flavoured teas, Jam Doughnut and Custard Cream are my favourites. Pretty sure they are only about 99p a box.

Aldi nuts. Love the Yeast Extract flavoured mixed nuts and the Salt & Vinegar peanuts. Know they are fattening, but at least they are protein.

Oh an Apple News for magazines. I read Red, Runners World, good housekeeping. DH has access to his cycling/rock magazines.

Always treat myself to one or two new books each month. And a small assortment of good local and imported cheese.

And on evenings when I've decided I'm allowed a drink: a balloon or two of Hennessy cognac, with some dark choc almonds or dark choc ginger to accompany.

HoppityBun · 08/03/2026 12:56

Fresh, ripe mangoes when they’re in season, which wonderfully is not that long away. Honestly, I think I could eat these forever.

A circuit round TK Maxx buying things I don’t really need for under a fiver. Sometimes I even put them back on the shelf without buying them, but it is a bit of an Aladdin’s cave treat.

Fresh ground coffee. I’m more and more astonished at the difference in price between making it at home in a cafeteria or an Aeroess and buying it while I’m out.

And the big one: staying in bed absolutely as long as I want.

You Tube & Spotify - both premium.

Actually not really cheap but in terms of cost per use/value not having ads they’re both brilliant.

Absolutely, four of us in our family use both regularly. Hate the ad interruptions

Butter with sea salt crystals instead of normal salted butter

Everythingwillbeok · 08/03/2026 18:34

Lovely thread 💖 I like lavazza coffee beans, Cheap and white wine, mini eggs & Aldi pomegranate candles. Affordable “luxuries” make my life very happy! Oh and incense cones & sticks I constantly have them burning.

Cantkidakidda · 08/03/2026 18:45

I don't have a kindle unlimited subscription but theres lots of free kindle books on amazon, they're usually the first book in a series but if I've enjoyed it I will look to buy the rest.
The cold coffees from home bargains are a nice cheap treat.
Like a lot of others here Tk Maxx soaps are fab and so much nicer than shower gel, the Italian honey I'd also great from here.

TwilightSkies · 08/03/2026 18:51

Perfume dupes. Obsessed! Smell as good as the real thing, lasts longer and sooo much cheaper.

I have the Borrowbox app (through my library) and those titles are included free in the e-press section. There are loads of magazines as well as books.

Oh it is! Thank you. Also women’s running. Great. Thank you.

PearlsTeapot · 08/03/2026 22:11

Disney plus. I use my Tesco club card points for it. We all use it so it feels like a good use of the points!

This post really makes me smile. I miraculously came into money several years ago, and after years of post divorce penury, began flying long haul business class, five star hotels - all that malarkey. But the memories of the enormous pleasure I got from a second hand novel and a bunch of hyacinths from Lidl back then, made me quite nostalgic for 'The hungry years...' 🙂

HorribleHisTories15 · 09/03/2026 02:11

Agree with you @OP,I’ve found some lovely lip glosses & lip oils from some Afro- Caribbean shops when visiting friends and family. Also sometimes just getting a natural/ eco body cream or oil from there too, at a fraction of the price of big high street stores, but also supporting local and foreign cooperatives. Simple treats.

Currently a weekly bunch of daffodils, only £1.

Same! Cheap and really cheers up the sitting room.

Love this thread - much more up my street than the extravagant treats one! 🤣

I love a bunch of daffs, a charity shop book, or a library trip too. ❤️

Today we have two surprise bags from Cooplands the bakers to pick up at 4pm via the too good to go app. Total cost £6 and we will have a picnic tea with it and always plenty left over. It's MUCH cheaper than a takeaway and the kids like the novelty of not knowing what will be in the bags. 🙂 I like that there's no cooking, and if we use paper plates, no washing up either.

I'd do that but sadly I'm gluten free 😔

Can i ask which companies you use please? I was considering buying one as a gift x

henlake7 · 10/03/2026 14:32

Odeon Unlimited. I go to the cinema 2 or 3 times a week, take a Meal Deal for lunch and its like an outing!
Posh fruit. If I want to treat myself (on a diet though) I get the more exotic or pre cut fruit.
Nescafe Lattes. Im 99% vegan but I just love a daily frothy coffee treat.

Missey85 · 10/03/2026 14:43

Decent coffee ☕ and books to read 💜

XenoBitch · 10/03/2026 16:14

Fresh cut daffodils when they are available. I always have a few bunches in my house.

EricTheHalfASleeve · 10/03/2026 16:30

Haven't read the full thread so apologies if this has been mentioned - some libraries now have pdf magazines. Free to borrow on a device.
Also free audiobooks - I have a weakness for Bill Nighy in the Charles Paris BBC adaptations
No fines with my city's library either!

Also free - spotting spring bulbs & early blossom on the trees
