Talk to me about Northwich vs Glossop/New Mills

Thinking about moving to Nothwich in Cheshire, splitting from ‘D’H and need a fresh start, I’m currently in Manchester and have family in Congleton so thinking it’s kinda not far but don’t want to be right on their doorstep.

The other option is Glossop/New Mills way which looks lovely and more rural but further from family.

Anyone live in either of these areas and fancy sharing their thoughts?

I’d like to stay around this area, Cheshire seems annoyingly longer on the train into Manchester although I work from home mostly so no commute to think about, that would just be for social trips into town.

I think Northwich is much nicer than Glossop to be honest. Nantwich is gorgeous if that’s an option?

Nantwich is a bit too far from Manchester for occasionally going to Manchester but thank you.

Glossop is fab! New Mills is full of smackheads, despite being 'rebranded' as artsy and upmarket. Ex New Mills resident.

I'm guessing Cheshire would be more expensive?
As it's more desirable or seen as posher

This is exactly the kind of real life intel I’m after - thank you!

It’s not particularly, and Glossop has quicker trains into Manchester, not that I need to go often but I’m keen to keep the option open without too much faff.

Nantwich is less than an hour on the train direct to Manchester. It's the same as Northwich.

TheGrimSmile · 06/03/2026 22:20

Glossop is definitely better for Manchester. I suppose it depends how often you go into Manchester.

placemats · 06/03/2026 22:28

Sandbach or Holmes Chapel. Both have train stations to Manchester Piccadilly and are close to the M6.

Northwich is a bit out of the way and the traffic congestion is awful.

Glossop is lovely but it's the the opposite side of Manchester.

Agree. I am also an ex New Mills resident. Terrible place.

I have family near Congleton. Holmes Chapel has a nice feel. 45 mins to Piccadilly.

Pieceofpurplesky · 06/03/2026 22:51

What is your budget and do you need schools etc? Some of the villages surrounding Northwich are lovely and the train from Frodsham is quicker to Manchester. Parts of Northwich are a bit grim and the town centre is hardly inspiring! However Cheshire and Chester are fantastic!

Sunflower07 · 07/03/2026 00:36

Northwich is ok but as PPs said, there are some areas to avoid (Greenbank, Castle, Rudheath, some of Leftwich. Barnton is a bit of a funny place too).

Frodsham and Helsby are nice.
Holmes Chapel is also nice and the train is about 45 mins into Piccadilly.

More expensive areas would be Knutford, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge etc. Closer to Manchester but pricey in comparison to HC and even more so in comparison to Northwich.

There are some villages around Warrington which are nice but I don’t know much about train lines round there. Lymm is nice.

I’d say unless you’ve really got your heart set on Northwich, I’d have a look at the other areas too.

YouLookNiceJackie · 07/03/2026 00:43

Have a look at Whaley Bridge, Chapel en le Frith and Buxton. All on the Manchester line. Buxton does get a lot more snow though.

Teenthree · 07/03/2026 00:47

Glossop -cool in a slightly League of Gentlemen way.

Northwich - inbred, Wickerman. Just no

Teenthree · 07/03/2026 00:48

Yes Chapel is nice. Buxton weather is nearly Alpine!

Ah for some reason when I looked at the trains the other day every one from Nantwich was changing at Crew, must’ve been some works going on.

Some of them are change at Crewe but there are also regular direct trains.

Great, yes Nantwich is an option too then. There must’ve been something going on with the trains when I was researching recently because everything was showing a change at Crewe, this is good news thank you :)

Nantwich is lovely, especially the south part near Shrewbridge Road. There’s a lovely lake and orchard.

placemats · 07/03/2026 13:13

Nantwich does have a lovely town centre. It's a place myself and my friends often visit. Not too close to Congleton either (which is a nightmare to park in).

Ahsheeit · 07/03/2026 13:14

Glossop is great. Everything within walking distance, thriving high street and lovely people.
