A suburban phenomenon?

I work in a school so came home at 4 and went straight out the back to mow the lawn.
I've been waiting forever to the grass to dry out enough to be cut.
Immediately after I finish I could hear a neighbour a few doors down starting their lawn mower, when I know they both work from home.
It's like a domino effect!
This phenomenon aso applies to the dreaded pressure washers 🙉

Noisy garden tools are the work of the devil 😡

Lawnmowers I obviously accept

But leaf blowers, pressure washers, anything that's designed for maximum noise 😭😭😡😡

My mum's lawn doesn't actually need mowing. I find it hard to believe that everyone suddenly needs their lawn mowing do they? Maybe the weather's been better in your neck of the woods.

That's another nice thing about living in a flat with a communal garden. In theory, we only have garden noise once every two weeks!

I love spring and summer but I do the miss the days that society wasn't so noisy.

My neighbour only ever pressure-washes his drive at 11am on Remembrance Sunday during the two minutes' silence.

I occasionally get the urge to go over there and shove it up his arse repurpose it.

Mydogisagentleman · 05/03/2026 16:58

If I had the means to dispose of the clippings, I'd do mine.
It's relatively small and it pretty much takes longer to get the mower out of the garage than it does to mow it.
Unfortunately since it hasn't been done since about October last year, it's like a meadow

Once you have it under control, you can mow it every other day and not bother with the grass box at all. Just let the clippings fall, and they drop down and decompose of their own accord. Makes a nice soft lawn to walk on, and also helps with moisture retention during hot dry weather in summer.😎

Seriously?

EmeraldRoulette · 05/03/2026 17:08

To be clear, I meant is that seriously the only time he does the pressure washing

I would want to repurpose the washer as well! Genuinely amazed that nobody has had a go at him for that.

Wafffly · 05/03/2026 17:12

My lawn length following the recent swamp conditions 😯

My next door neighbour mowed this afternoon so the pressure is on 😂

Yes mine really needed mowing as it was probably back in October since it was last cut.
It was still too damp to be cut if I’m honest but it has been warm today and I was hoping it would have dried out a bit while I was at work, hence me taking the chance.

@onelumporthree Wow he is seriously antisocial!

I did mine if Monday after hearing a neighbour do theirs! I only took the top off it to give it a tidy up.

I love the sound of lawnmowers, feels all summery.

WifeOfBaths · 05/03/2026 17:38

Just finished mowing ours but it doesn’t sound like I’ve had any influence on the neighbours so far.

FordExplorer · 05/03/2026 17:41

You’ve mowed your lawn and you’re annoyed that a neighbour did the same thing - on the first day of grass being dry enough to mow after a loooong, wet winter? Really?

OP did not say she was annoyed

I interpreted it as a gentle joke/observation.

I know this is the internet, but there isn't actually a law that you have to be angry on the internet!

I'm now wondering why everyone else's lawn has grown and mum's hasn't...! Maybe you've all had more sunshine than we've had?

damelza · 05/03/2026 17:49

I reckon people wait until someone else starts the mower, and then they feel OK about doing their own grass, or don't want to be thought of as lazy for not doing it. It's all go along the row of gardens after that!

HowDairy · 05/03/2026 17:50

@Nope, not annoyed, just wondering if lawn mowering (other noisy power tools are available to annoy your neighbours with!) had that effect in other neighbourhoods.

Thanks for the photographic evidence of a lawn in need of mowing @Wafffly
You'll go far on the AIBU Parking debates!

Yes, exactly this! Thank you.

We have had about 2 and a half days of sunshine in the SE.
I was hoping that would be enough to dry out the bog garden enough for the lawn to be cut. It was still very damp but it's done now.
Is your mum's grass a special slow growing variety?
If so, you need to save the seeds and market it as I'm sure it would go down extremely well in suburbia and specifically in MN world 😄
