Anyone got a dental implant?

What’s it like? I’m possibly loosing a tooth tomorrow and feeling quite shit about it :( I’m only 43 too but it’s because of a dodgy wisdom tooth growing into the side of it. How have people found the implants?

I've got one but it is for a tooth much further forward, right behind a canine so would have left an obvious gap.I also have another gap but it is further back and I can't really justify the couple of thousand pounds it would cost to get another implant.

The other drawbacks of an implant, apart from the cost, is that you have a gap for about 6 weeks while the bone grows round the implant anchor. You can get a temporary tooth but obviously for a cost!

The implant felt a bit weird for a couple of months just because it is a dead 'thing' in your mouth, but I don't notice it now.

Your dentist should go through any options for you - a bridge might be a cheaper choice if there is a suitable tooth to fix it to - or they might advise you to leave a gap if it is not noticeable.

Good luck tomorrow. It is always crap having to have teeth out.

I had an implant and don’t even think about it. It was done in stages and I paid at each stage. I’m delighted with it. Do you have £3000?

Several 😆 best decision ever. Put an end to the repeated tooth infections.

Do implants stain or attract plaque like normal teeth?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 04/03/2026 13:43

Yeah I have the money, interesting point from PP that I might be able to cope with the gap as its right at the back.

They are going to see if they can band, fill and cap it but there isn't a lot of it left so prepping for the worst case scenario!

I'd like to know this too, are they just treated like teeth after they are in?

They don't stain or get plaque - they are nice and smooth all the time. You do need to be aware of cleaning round the gum line, but otherwise they are just like real teeth.

I have had three in for about 6 months and another waiting for its crown to be made.
Implant is better than alternative of gap, or false teeth. Per pp they feel a bit odd as they are inert but I don't think about it much now.

If I have to have the very back teeth out I won't have implants for them...implant dentist says people adjust quickly to the loss of back ones, they are not visible and eating soon adjusts.

Your dentist might offer to put an implant plug in when he does the extraction - mine was £450 on top of the implant/crown but the bone wasn't good enough without.

Do I wish I didn't need implants...of course, were they the best option for me- yes.

Good luck with extraction, take ibuprofen before you go (if you can take it).

Thanks for your kind words everyone, we are going to try root canal and a crown the dentist seemed relatively confident and they have killed the nerve today so I shouldn't be in pain while waiting for the root canal. Still may have to come out if this doesn't work but will cross that bridge when we get there!
