How to cancel window cleaner?

WhoreDing · 04/03/2026 08:38

I've been using a window cleaner for five years.

I didn't sign a contract or anything like that.

He comes once a month and texts me the day before to let me know.

We're friendly. I'll stand and have a chat with him for a few minutes if I catch him but not every time.

I want to cancel him. How can I word a text to this effect, please?

I do not think that any "reputable" cleaners still use ladders and squeegees. All use the water in a van and long pole ...

@WhoreDing

I put a note through my old window cleaners door to say that we wouldn’t need him anymore. He used to clean them the old fashioned way and clamber up on the flat roof and up ladders. I was always so worried he’d fall off.
I wonder too if you can be sued if he fell off your property?
Luckily he never did.

Coffeeishot · 04/03/2026 09:59

My window cleaner still uses a bucket and ladder and he has a "reputable" business, he just works locally.

raspberets · 04/03/2026 10:00

I told mine my brother was going to be doing mine for me from now on.

Same, as do many still.

the80sweregreat · 04/03/2026 10:03

My old window cleaner couldn’t reach the back windows after we had an extension done , so the new man with the water on board his van and the longer cleaning poles was better.
I feel bad letting people go, but that’s business and they tend to find other customers easily enough.

He does a bad job. He uses deionised water and a pole and I hate it. It doesn't actually get windows clean and leaves marks.

When I've raised this in the past, he's come back out and redone the windows a bit better. So I'm reluctant to tell him this because I know he'll be really apologetic and want to come back and make it right. I don't want that. I want to just cancel.

I cancelled my window cleaner for the same reason - I just politely messaged him and said that my financial situation had changed and I had to cut back expenses where I could.
He was completely fine over it and he still does my neighbour's house and we're still as friendly as we were.
Like you though, I didn't feel able to tell him that I hated the method he was using which is silly I suppose.
He used to leave huge reams of waters and splatter marks all over my windows and never did the frames so they were spattered with grime from the method he was using.

caringcarer · 04/03/2026 10:12

Hi, I'm cutting back a bit and so from the end of March I won't be having my windows cleaned any more. Thank you.

Viviennemary · 04/03/2026 11:21

If you've been having him a long time I think its kinder to tell him in person. Say you're cutting back. If you are always out when he comes send a text.

Because the other method of going up ladders is pretty dangerous and lots of cleaners have permanently injured themselves from falls.

So I get that, but the issue is that the windows are not clean? Like, a lot of things are safer than going up a ladder. It would be safer to do a small dance, or salute the late Queen, but it's not really tackling the central goal.

purplecorkheart · 04/03/2026 12:42

Hi Window Cleaner,

Due to a change in circumstances we no longer need your services. Thanks and all the best.

I guess the issue is that there isn’t really a safe alternative.

Omg I’m in the same situation! I want to cancel my window cleaner because he doesn’t do a good job just uses those pole things and water and it leaves marks and just doesn’t clean them properly. He’s also not been doing my back bathroom window either and I actually caught him out this time and he told me to take off £2 off the money or he could come back. He then said something about health issues as to why he forgot the back bathroom but I know he hasn’t done it a few times which made me feel bad but I’m just not wanting him to clean my windows anymore 🫣

Hello x, hope you are well. I’d like to terminate our window cleaning arrangements at xxx property, effective xxx date / immediately. Thank you very much for your services over the last 5 years.

Best regards, @WhoreDing

Edited

She can’t send something this casual to terminate the services. It needs to be more like:

WITHOUT PREJUDICE

Dear Sirs,

We act on behalf of WhoreDing (“our Client”) and are instructed to provide formal notice of the immediate termination of all window cleaning services (“the Services”) previously undertaken at our Client’s premises.

All attendances in relation to the Services are to cease forthwith. Kindly confirm cancellation in writing as soon as possible, and in any event within seven days of receipt of this letter.

Yours faithfully,

Pompous, Ridicularous and Overtopus LLP

We also cancelled mine last week. I was honest and said I just can't justify it anymore as everything is so expensive. Saved the money, felt a bit less pressure. Then a few days later my phone bill went up and the council announced an increase in council tax and an end to free parking.

which cancelled out what I saved! 🫠 (good job I did!)

Anyway, I was embarrassed and he was fine about it! No big deal

MotherofPufflings · 04/03/2026 15:36

We moved house rather than have an awkward conversation with the window cleaner about the standard of his cleaning.

Seriously contemplating this.

Seriously contemplating this.

I truly believe if the truth is likely to offend, tell a big fat lie. Bro needs a job, he’s doing ‘em.

Megapint · 04/03/2026 15:41

Next time he's at your house pop out and say 'Hi after this clean we don't want to have our windows done anymore '

Chatterlyssecret · 04/03/2026 16:08

Tell him you have found a cheaper cleaner that uses a wash cloth, chamois leather & scrim cloth & cleans them the way it was for hundreds of years.

WhoreDing · 04/03/2026 16:10

I'm not worried about him being offended so much as its just bloody awkward.

I agree, keep it casual, and come up with some excuse about cutbacks (if you’re British like me and can’t just say no more, thank you)

mine tries to come every month and I put him off with a variety of excuses and a suggestion to push it back/delay etc. Seems to work!

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 04/03/2026 16:43

Hi. Sorry but have decided to to stop having the windows cleaned. Thanks for doing them all this time. Take care, Whoreding.

We've just cancelled our window cleaner for a similar reason, sprayed water isn't good for double glazing. When I texted him to say this he found me another of his window cleaners who still uses a ladder and no spray.
