Knee injury still no better a week on, what could it be?

Posted last week looking for advice for a knee injury, after falling coming home from work.

Even though deep down I knew it needed to be seen I posted asking on here if it was worth a hosp appointment or something that wouldn’t hopefully heal itself and the general consensus was, if it’s a joint injury get it seen, which I did.

The unit had given me crutches, did all the relative nerve, control tests and those coming back ok alongside being under 55 didn’t qualify me for an xray and she sent me away telling me to rest and take a few days of work which I did.

We are now a full week on and my right knee in particular is as bad when in non stressed position but worse when trying to do anything with it, walk, manoeuvre myself to get comfy, stairs etc. it almost feels like something in my knee is not stable and and the slightest twitch is sending searing pain through it and something new I noticed tonight is I’m getting a weird cold/chilled sensation in it when trying to move after a period of sitting.

Though very uncomfortable, I can weight-bare some so I’m almost certain nothing is broken however what is it?!

Im due back in on work on Wednesday, office as well as outreach work but due to not being in the job a year, yet to receive sick pay and I’m so worried about what to do in the short term moving forward while me knees sorts itself out.

Just wondered if anyone has had an injury symptoms that sounds similar. I’m going back to the hosp tomorrow so that hopefully they will X-ray, but if I’m right and it isn’t a bone thing I’m not sure what next strap will be.

Just feeling very sorry for myself.

I had this, I’d torn my meniscus, ACL and MCL, you need an mri. And physio. Maybe surgery.

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 02/03/2026 22:55

I had this and after an MRI it turned out to be a broken fibula and torn meniscus. You definitely need to get it scanned.

(I could - just about - weight bear with the help of crutches, so that doesn’t mean something can’t be broken)

Can I ask how you fell @HippeePrincess as in how did the knees take the strain and also how did you start the process? The lady who seen me last week was lovely but I didn’t seem to even make the X-Ray threshold so I’m not feeling overly hopeful about tomorrow but I don’t know what else to do rather then go back and plead my case.

@AlcoholicAntibiotic how long did you have to wait for an MRI and did anything show up on an X-ray before hand, I’m so worried they are just going to send me away to “rest it” for another amount of time.

I am currently waiting for an MRI in my knee and I am sorry to tell you the wait time in my LA in Scotland is 38 weeks. I have had physio but there is only so much they can do so it’s a waiting game now. I think I’ve torn my meniscus and possibly a ligament. I can walk and drive but I am uncomfortable most days, can’t wear anything bar trainers, and some days I am just in pain. I am on prescription anti inflammatories. I think you need to go back to your GP or minor injuries. An x ray didn’t show anything at the time of my accident.

I ended up going privately as have health insurance through work, so actually didn’t have that long to wait. I think it was only a couple of weeks in the end.

Didn’t have an X-ray as NHS didn’t think I needed one and private doctor went straight for an MRI.

You definitely need to go back. Be politely assertive and be very clear about what you can't do and what a knock on effect it's having on basic tasks. They may say you just need physio so definitely also mention the development of symptoms. If you say you've been resting all the time they could say that you're not moving enough and vice versa.

I've been through a lot of injuries and have often found I've not been taken seriously, or it have time to get listened to. This is the sort of thing I've started using chatgpt for, to help me say the correct thing to get listened to. I've made more progress since doing that.

When my sister tore her ALC it took about 18 months until she finally got surgery and it was rescheduled 3 times.

angelcake20 · 03/03/2026 09:34

Can’t believe they haven’t sent you for an MRI. Definitely go back and be clear about the pain and the impact.

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 03/03/2026 10:04

Thank you all, here now. Fuelled with chat GPT determination, hopefully they take me seriously.

And the government wonder why a soaring number of people are losing jobs and claiming incapacity benefits. It’s everyone whose been injured being left to linger in pain with not even a X-ray ffs like it’s 1726 not 2026. You’re being treated barbarically OP.

I was sideways galloping on slightly uneven ground and my
knee popped sideways and the fall came after I couldn’t weight bear but I had some momentum going.

I managed to get on an MRI cancellations list and once the physio referred me I didn’t wait long, GP was not helpful in requesting the MRI and I should have pushed for it in the first place. The results took 12 weeks though. Ridiculous. In hindsight I should have gone privately.

I’ve since had injections with no luck and I am considering the surgery. However 2 years on I’m also considering living with the pain as it’s not hugely unstable now.

Mum8686 · 06/03/2026 20:38

If you fell because it gave way it could be arthritis starting. You can self refer to physio where I am. They write to your GP if they think you need scans.

zoolikefeatures · 07/03/2026 06:50

How are you OP?

Came to say this as this is what I currently have. MRI needed and physio. I think physio will sort mine and hoping surgery isn't required.

I fell and had no bruises but the leg was painful but not swollen. I was told there was nothing wrong and made to feel a bit silly for asking for help.

Over a week later I was in plaster to my thigh as I had broken the leg. I have a high pain threshold and when I broke my hand it was not plastered for a few weeks and then it was a rush job.

Just posting as you don't need a lot of swelling or bruising for a fracture.

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 07/03/2026 09:32

Hi Everyone and thanks to those that checked in.

As said in my last post, went back to the urgent care unit armed with my chat GPT responses so that I wasn’t fobbed off and I indeed was fobbed off.

TBF I genuinely don’t think I have broken anything so realistically not sure what they could have done but the pain was so bad, I was willing to try anything and still felt very rushed and that he didn’t particularly listen to what I had to say. Told him whatever I had done was the same on both knees as pain and difficulties in the exact same place and he concluded by saying he felt it I had damaged a tendon on my left knee on the the inside and tendon on the right knee on the outside, which did not make sense to me as no pain whatsoever on the outside of legs!

The good news is that I was told to refer myself to physio (did not know that was a thing!) and that there has been some improvement, certainly in the left knee and I think gradually in the right knee too, certainly shuffling about a bit more confidently, though stairs, getting up and down and just standing are still very painful.

If I’m lying in bed I find I can slowly straighten my leg with my knee facing inwards but trying to adjust so my leg is straight, knee facing upwards is really hard and sore.

My manager was very sympathetic and approved AL for me this week which took the pressure off and do think I will be back next week with a bit of support from DH with lifts back and forth.

Thankfully falling was nothing more than a very slippy slope @Mum8686 that caught me off guard and due to having a heavy back pack on made me to fall backwards so wasn’t able to stop myself with my hands, fell on my bum with bends in knees and the lower legs coming out at a 90 degree angle and knees forced sharply inwards.
