How to stop static in clothes?

I am attending a formal event where I’ll be wearing a dress with a wool coat over the top. I tried it on last night and the dress was full of static when I took the coat off. How can I stop the static when I’m wearing the outfit?

Hair spray

Perhaps a really old fashioned idea, but wearing an underskirt or slip really reduces static and cling.

Wash or spray with fabric softener.

Yes, rinse the dress in fabric conditioner. Will stop static and clinging. Always used to do that with underslips.

Thank you! This maybe silly question, but do I put detergent in the washing machine too or just fabric softener?

I still wear a slip or half slip as so many skirts and dresses now aren't lined. I think a lot of people still do.

A lot of old cars suffered from this which is why you would see a piece of rubber dangling down from the undercarriage to ground itself. Are you able to wear rubber soles with your dress?

If the dress is clean, you only need the fabric conditioner.

If you've got somewhere to hang it to dry, you can just swish it through in some warm water in the sink.

Static is one of the main reasons I don't buy man made fibres. It is hard these days though as it's everywhere.
