Should I replace my dishwasher?

Daft question maybe..
It was already here were we moved in 20 years ago..and now it's died. It was a godsend when we had four kids at home, but now we are down to just three of us living here (DS2 will always be here as has disabilities)
We are finally getting round to replacing the kitchen units and floor, and I am really torn as to whether we need another dishwasher or not, or whether the space would be better used for drawers or a cupboard!

Has anyone given up using one and not regretted it?

It depends how often you are going to wash up every day? After every meal or snack or just once or twice? Because a dishwasher is also a great place to store the dirty dishes before it washes them.

We gave ours up when we downsized two years ago. There are only two of us at home now and we've kind of got used to it and told ourselves it wasn't a problem.

Then, we stayed in an air bnb with one and oh my goodness I realised how much I want one. Every cup and spoon can be put in the dishwasher rather than cluttering up the worktop, the dinner things can all go in the machine rather than us having to stand at the sink for 20 minutes once we've eaten. All this is amplified when guests come and at Christmas.

We're currently in the process of creating a laundry cupboard so we can move the washing machine out of the kitchen and replace it with a dishwasher. I'm so looking forward to the ease and the tidier kitchen.

I would not be without one. Only 2 of us at home we use it.

Coild you look at a slimline model?

No, don't give it up. Only 2 of us in the house now but I'd replace immediately if mine broke. Infact it did break after 10 years and we bought a new one 3 months ago (same day)

Depends how much you need the space, how much washing up you produce (which is more dependent on how much you cook, not how many of you there are) and how much you like/hate washing up.

I'd replace it straight away from wherever could deliver one fastest.

There’s only little ol me most of the time, although l frequently have friends stay over. Wouldn’t be without one. It might be worth investing in more crockery so that you only run it when full. And it’s a clean mug for every cup of coffee.

Are you intending to stay in your house? A fitted dishwasher and a modern kitchen makes places much more marketable.

I wouldn't be without one; essential as far as I'm concerned. Even though there are just the two of us in the house nowadays.

EnchantedDaydream · 02/03/2026 13:13

Three of us and will be two at some point hopefully and there's no way I'd give it up. On Saturday it wasn't working and I handwashed a small amount of dishes from one meal, no way am I doing that every night, often there are times when I've been batch cooking or baking and can fill it by myself in one evening.

MyNextDoorNeighbourVotesReform · 02/03/2026 13:13

When my dishwasher died I didn't replace it. I love washing up, looking out of the window, watching the birds 😊

dailyconniptions · 02/03/2026 13:22

Definitely keep it. My arms are quite painful now, as I've got older. I can feel it a great deal when I'm washing up. Repetitive action. So it would be crazy imo to do away with it when you may be very thankful for it in the future.
