Made redundant from NHS. How long to get redundancy payment?

Sailawaygirl · 28/02/2026 14:22

Been made redundant from NHS. Last working day and pay day was 25th Feb. Does anyone have experience of when the redundancy payment comes through? HR have been terrible, been unable to confirm how much, just have confirmed 'potentially' and I've asked frequently for a time frame and they just responded it's in hand and failed to understand why it might be helpful to know when payment will come through.
I don't know how long I need to eek out last pay packet. If its more than a month I'm going to struggle to pay mortgage but also I know I have a large lump sum coming so I also feel awkward telling people I'm watching my budget.

What do you mean “potentially” you will receive redundancy pay?

Insidesains · 28/02/2026 14:24

Presumably your toddler and husband okay from the sushi scare?!

rubyslippers · 28/02/2026 14:25

If you’re not working notice your redundancy pay should be in your last pay packet and if under £30,000 is tax free
your employer has to give you a statement on how the reenact pay is calculated as well

this should not be a surprise to a well functioning HR : payroll dept so they need to tell you

She didn't say this. She said that she has only been told "potentially" when the payment might arrive.

Wrong

The redundancy letter was in December after the 'consultation' closed. It says that I will be potentionally awarded redundancy based on my service of xx years and current pay of xx. I then went into a period of redeployment for 3 months. Did a work trial which ended when that job also was at risk of redundancy!
I have asked lots for a full confirmed breakdown of redundancy and HR have just pointed to the initial letter and no where does it say when the payment will come

You should have had it in your final pay in my experience.
If you left on the 21st, which is the same day as your payroll payday, it should have been paid to you then. If they were proposing to pay it to you at the end of march, they'll need to make a further payment just for the redundancy pay and have to hold your p45 back for a month.
I would get onto the phone to the first thing on Monday

Insidesains · 28/02/2026 14:38

Surely you either are and are not entitled to redundancy and there is no “potentially” about it? Or is this an enhanced package?

Sailawaygirl · 28/02/2026 14:54

The potentially bit was clarified as annual leave might be added or taken away or ? Other deductions so they couldn't give the exact figure but said what calculations they were using. I've double checked my long service multiple times because it was saying something different on esr. The potentially was also because they obviously wanted to redeploy as many people as possible. But as loads of my pay grade were being made redundant there weren't many jobs to be redeployed into

This is very validating! I have had weekly contact and emailing my HR contact and HR were just getting annoyed with me, I even have an email saying they fail to understand why I am worries as I have a letter confirming redundancy ( the inital one that says poten) and that it will be calculated.
I've been made feel that I've been unreasonable for asking for clarity ( been asking for months). It's caused me so much extra stress !!

How many are being made redundant? When is your last day?

Sailawaygirl · 28/02/2026 15:07

From my team 14 were either going to be made redundant or redeployed, i dont know how many people left before as consulation has been going on simce august with threat of redundancy.. My last day was 25th and pay day was 25th.

So some still don’t know whether redeployed or redundant? Whereas you definitely know redundant?

Sailawaygirl · 28/02/2026 15:15

@Insidesains no I work in a very spread out department, pretty muxh in a team on 1! I don't know what has happened to the others. We all have the same redundancy day if we weren't redeployed

have you discussed with anyone else you know being made redundant whether they know how much or not?

surely you can roughly calculate yourself?

Itsmetheflamingo · 28/02/2026 15:19

you should know how much your redundancy is- it’s in your letter. Yes, they can’t tell you about annual leave etc in advance but that’s not the redundancy payment anyway?

Sailawaygirl · 28/02/2026 15:26

I know roughly how much it will be.. My anxiety is when it will be paid now.

OP posts:
Itsmetheflamingo · 28/02/2026 15:27

It seems very likely it’ll be next payday?

This

no wonder HR is a bit confused why you keep on contacting them

Sailawaygirl · 28/02/2026 15:31

Well they could have said you will be paid in Feb pay packet or in march. But they wouldn't confirm.
Also several people kn this thread thought it should be this pay check

thats not fair. It presumably will be. The op will stop contacting them if they confirm that!

Sailawaygirl · 28/02/2026 15:36

I'm expecting it in my next pay check now. But I wondered if that's what other peoples experience was. I have a friend who was medically retired had hers was 3 months after she formally left!

They have told her they can’t “confirm” it.
Periods of redundancy and redeployment are absolutely covered with restrictions and rules
