To have my cake and eat it- but where?

I have an unexpected afternoon off today and had the idea I'd go to a cafe solo and get a slice of cake and a milkshake and read for an hour or so. Then I realised I could probably go to the local farm shop and get a nice bakery cake and do the drinks at home for a similar price and now I'm not sure which to go for because both sound delightful. The whole cake would last a few days and I could share with the rest of my family. I know this is a lovely dilemma to have, so light-hearted answers please.

Every woman I know needs time away from her family. Cafe!

Let them eat cake! Vote for sharing at home 🍰

Do both! Go out for cake and enjoy being out of the house. Swing by the farm shop on the way home and pick up a cake for the family to share.

I bloody love having time to myself (a rare treat!) so coffee/cake/cafe combo sounds perfect OP. Treat yourself! ☕️ 🍰 👌🏻

In the spirit of having your cake and eating it: both!
Most farm shops have cafes. Have a slice of cake and a milkshake there, then take a cake (and some nice cheese maybe) home.
Have a lovely afternoon 😊

Definitely a case of "Great minds..." rather than "Fools seldom..."!

Oh absolutely. Home would be peaceful and quiet, I wouldn't even consider coming home today if there was going to be someone at home!

Seems like I should have added both as an option to my poll. Seems like the only way to please everyone so far. (And would probably please me most too).

Edited

Couldn't agree more, you can never have enough cake, either in slices or a whole one. Do both!

Will you get involved with things at home though? You know pop washing in or out.load/unload DW put hoover round.I would vote for cafe and treat yourself!

LeavesOnTrees · 27/02/2026 09:52

I vote for cafe. That way someone brings you your drink AND does the washing up.

HHCrochetDiva · 27/02/2026 10:21

Definitely both! You get someone else providing you with food, and then you get to enjoy more later. 😁

halftermhalfawake · 27/02/2026 10:47

I vote YABU because it's 11am and I now want cake 😅

I am sure you are all waiting with baited breath to know whether I have had my cake and eaten it... The answer to this is absolutely!

I did make a slight mistake and bought a whole chocolate cake from the farm shop on my way to another cafe and then when I got to said cafe the chocolate cake of my dreams was there so I had that with chocolate milkshake and read my book for a good hour, which absolutely filled me with joy. Thank you for all those who voted for that option because much as I love my home, it was a delight to focus just on the book and food. However I am still feeling a little sick (and I couldn't even finish the whole slice, it was huge!) so now I have a rather pricey cake on my side. Luckily it's best before is over a week so I am sure by the end of the next weekend I will be ready for it.

I hope all those who wished for cake off the back in of this thread today also get to have their cake and eat it.

<unbaits breath>
Thanks for letting us know what transpired, @Littlebittiredoflife
Glad it was 99% successful.
Didn't have anything cake (rare treat as I'm diabetic) but I did have a bite of DH's pistachio cookie when we went out to get the paper and have a coffee.

Tempted not to edit out <unfaithful breath> but it gives quite the wrong impression of me!
