Hi all, DD nearly 10 and I want to be prepared for their first period. Im in peri now so its been such a long time for me, and I always used heavy duty pads myself (and was happy with that). I feel im so behind the times now so any recs? I havent a clue about period pants but if we went down that route, im sure id only feel relaxed with them wearing the heavy duty ones for school. But can anyone advise on brands or whether to purchase these intro boxes first or a few cheap M&S ones just in the house? Im panicking in case it happens and I have nothing in the house!

My DD started when she was 11. I'd got some Modibodi period pants in for her, which she likes, but we find they sometimes leak on very heavy days or overnight. We also got some Wuka pants and shorts which seem to leak less, especially overnight. She usually puts a pad in the pants in the morning, then changes/removes this at lunch, and the pants last the rest of the day (usually).

@Ditsy79 did you buy the pants for the heaviest flow though, I notice they all have different absorbency

Keep an eye out in Aldi for their period pants - £7.99 for three pairs and my favourite of the sets I own (they do come in tween/teen sizes). My M&S ones are fine, but the aldi ones leak least and feel secure. I agree about putting a pad in and removing at lunchtime, and she should always keep a spare pair in her bag (the aldi ones aren't as obviously period pants as the M&S ones).

Can I ask how you was the period pants?
Is it hand wash only?

Ditsy79 · 27/02/2026 07:07

@Dahlagain We got the Modibodi for heavy flow. They look just like cotton knickers. The Wuka stretch ones are available in heavy or super heavy.
@JG24 I just wash them in the machine on a 30°C wash. I do a pre-rinse first, then 30°C with a very small amount of washing liquid. DD puts the dirty ones in a wet-bag in the bathroom and I was every couple of days. If you look after them, they can last a couple of years.

I got some innersy ones off Amazon for my daughter, she says they are very comfortable. Also not too expensive.

DD has had M and S, Primark, Aldi, Flowette and Cheeky pants and we keep coming back to cheeky pants, keep an eye out on their website as they can have some really good offers including in clearance

DD likes M&S ones and has different ones for different flows. I started with just a pack of standard flow ones and she asked for some heavier and lighter ones once she got to know what she needed. She actually uses a mix of pads (reusable and disposable), tampons and pants and our bathroom has a wash bag fully stocked. I have used flowette pants for years and they are my favourite (with a reusable pad on heaviest day otherwise on their own). I wash in the washing machine and they have all survived the tumble dryer! Younger DD is 10 and has a small starter pack I bought from eBay in her room https://ebay.us/m/o8V0KE and a small pack of period pants. She can decide what she wants when the time comes!
