I just watched it. So moving. A beautiful conversation.

Guessing no one has watched it. I recommend it. The idea sounds crass or exploitative but I dont think it is. It is an interview he recorded knowing he was dying.

Hi @TheladyinthecardiganI watched this earlier. I was looking to see if anyone else had posted about it yet. I didn’t think it was crass at all, I personally think it was well done, and clearly his full choice to do so. I did have to stop at the bit where he was about to address his daughters at the end tho. Just for a bit. I was watching next to oh, but on my tablet and it was just an instinctional “fuck, I can’t watch that now!”, as I had just been telling him about what is was etc, and I just knew it would likely be quite moving and I’d end up a bit watery-eyed. I did then finish watching it a little bit after.

I don’t know if this programme/interview had been publicised beforehand, I certainly didn’t see it on Netflix, like they usually show what’s “coming soon”, until it was put on a couple of days ago. The thought of speaking to your children (and others) after you die is a strange one, isn’t it? I don’t know how long ago the interview was done, but it did seem as though his ALS was quite a fast progressing type. I was a little shocked by his death, I hadn’t realised he was ill, so I didn’t know until it happened. I think, like many of us, probably, I knew him first and best for GA, but had seen him in other things afterwards too, like Euphoria. I had no idea he was in Saved By The Bell! Or a couple of the other older things. He was almost exactly the same age as me, by a couple weeks or so, so must’ve been quite young when he was in some of those.

He handled the interview so well, and I think the way it was filmed was quite sensitive too; no cameraman etc in the same room. I expected it to be moving and I think it was.

What was your take on it?

It felt weird to me so I didn’t watch past 5 minutes. He could tell his family what he wanted to- why did he need to tell the world his private words for them? $$$$s? just felt tasteless and weird. But I tried to watch it the day after he died so maybe it was too soon…

I too pondered why, and that he could have left something private for his family. I wondered though about the living on after he'd gone. When you act i guess your identity feels very public.

Maybe money. Understandable to want to provide.

I turned it off and came back to it. At first I couldn't get comfortable...a sort of what is this feeling?... no judgement of him, but wondered about the Netflix angle and creating entertainment from his situation

But setting aside this questions, I watched it found it quite unexpected. I thought it would be sad in an obvious way but his acceptance and how he was dealing with what happened really left an impression. Like he acknowledged, it was hard to understand.

I also thought the interviewer was great.

I imagine he did still tell his family and friends himself and definitely didn’t do it just through this! He’d have spent as much time with them as he possibly could. He has done a lot to raise awareness for ALS and I think a big part of doing this interview would’ve been to continue this. I’m not sure it matters about the money, tbh, whether he did it for that or not, because he clearly chose to do it and if that means that there’s some extra money for his family and/or towards any ALS charitable donation then why not? He’s an actor and would’ve had a good income from acting, which would’ve gone towards his children so any money from this wouldn’t have been anywhere near what he could’ve made had he been able to continue acting for the next 20 or however many years it could’ve been otherwise.
