UK's first geo-thermal energy plant

It fired up this morning and will generate enough energy to power 10,000 homes from three-mile deep hot water reservoirs, for over 20 hours a day, with minimum maintenance. As a useful by-product, it also yields lithium. Am I slightly odd to be thrilled by this news.

I think it’s incredible and hope it can be used in other places.
I can’t even fathom 3 miles underground.

According to what I have read, it will work best in hard rock (granite) regions, so mainly in western UK. The first is between Camborne and Truro, but there are other sites on granite outcrops, one of which is very near us. Which comes with the bonus of being in an ancient mining area, and also dense in rare earth minerals.

Brilliant news. When we went on holiday to Iceland, you could do a tour of a geothermal plant and it was so fascinating to see how massive the turbines are.

Thanks so much for posting this! I had not spotted it in the news and it has made me very happy indeed!

wobblychristmastree · 26/02/2026 19:46

Amazing!

SabrinaThwaite · 26/02/2026 19:55

It’s not the UK’s first geothermal energy system though.

Southampton has been running a district heating system using geothermal energy since 1986.

Okay, @SabrinaThwaite ... you had better write to the Press!

The press aren't great fans of non fossil fuel energy. They would much rather you viewed it as woke net zero nonsense and concentrated on burning that oil baby.

It’s a shame that the Southampton system isn’t more widely known about, given that it’s been pretty successful for the last 40 years.

That would not suit the agenda.

The Southampton one is the one right next to West Quay isn't it? I was reading the information signs last time I was there.

Summerhillsquare · 28/02/2026 17:16

It's brilliant. There is potential in other areas, along the fault line in the rock running south west to north east basically.

Papyrophile · 28/02/2026 17:18

Sorry not to keep up but I had a cataract fixed yesterday.

Yes it is, powers the shopping centre and IKEA.

I hadn’t heard of the Southampton one, the new Cornwall one definitely sounds like something to get excited about.
