takeaway style pizzas without takeaways?

LuckyOliveDeer · 25/02/2026 19:07

I am not good at cooking at all and the last time I tried to make a pizza it fell apart and was a pile of mush. my local takeaway does a pizza with a thick soft base and a decent amount of toppings but to save money I would rather try and make it myself or find a good dupe. Does anyone have any advice

Asda pizza counter? It's something like 2 x pizzas for £5 or £6.00

Brewtiful · 25/02/2026 19:19

Yes I came here to suggest the same. The Asda pizza counter ones are delicious and a bargain compared to any others I've tried.

Aldi Specially Selected pizzas are nice and have thicker base.

Aldi do a pizza base that you add toppings too. There is a thick base one by a company called the pizza dough company (i think). They have two portions of dough in the box

We get Crosta and Mollica bases and add our own toppings - I believe they are one of the 'better' bases on terms of UPF etc and it means we can be a bit more conservative with our cheese intake than we might otherwise be!

I buy sourdough pizza bases from this company. They're more Italian Pizzeria style than Pizza Hut though.

Felicity Cloake (Guardian) does a great pizza dough recipe that has never failed me. You can keep it in the fridge for ages and even freeze it. I recommend the frying pan method. Roll into a shape smaller than a frying pan, (if you want an easy life do it on some greaseproof paper the same size) put on the toppings and lift onto the hot pan. The base will crisp up and then pop it under a hot grill. I just put the base in the dry pan and stick the sauce and toppings on quickly whilst in the pan.

We buy Crosta&Mollica uncheesed pizza bases and then add our own toppings & cheese. It's a good quality pizza and a bit of a step up from supermarket pizza but pretty cheap.

Buy a pizza (any pizza) from a supermarket
Heat it up,
Put it back in the box you bought it in,
Bend it in half,
Let it partially cool down,
Wait for 40 minutes after your chosen meal time before you serve it.
Scrape topping off box lid back onto pizza,
Cut badly into unequal wedges,
Serve up and enjoy. 👍

If you want nice pizza - crosta e mollica or fresh pizza from Waitrose, Tesco finest or whatever. But I don’t think that’s what you mean. If you want a pizza hut dupe Sainsbury’s does a stuffed crust for about £6 and they have dips too. You can add more toppings yourself. It’s basically Pizza Hut and my go to if hungover.

Dr. oetker suprema pizza from Iceland (don’t know where else it’s available) and real nice. Dc said much nicer than dominos etc

Bjorkdidit · 25/02/2026 20:05

Crosta Mollica or most of the oval 'finest' supermarket ones, I had a lovely one from the Co-op a couple of weeks ago.

I don't like the Asda ones, the base is nothing like fresh pizza.

Somersetbaker · 25/02/2026 20:18

Proper pizzas are thin and crispy. The nearest thing to a decent pizza is buy a basic supermarket cheese and tomato pizza, then pimp it up with olives, capers, spinach, anchovies etc depending on what you like, then cook it for rather longer and hotter than the instructions.. If you prefer rubbish like most of the delivery options pour a big slug of cheap oil on top, then shove it in a cardboard box to fester for an hour, before chucking in the bin.

Sainsbury fresh pizzas are nice.
I also quite like supermarket Pizza Express pizzas. Supermarket pizzas have improved a lot since I was young!
