2012 VW touran.
My first car, started driving old! Bought for 5k 3 years ago.
Automatic gearbox and as soon as warrenty ran out it the electrical component needed replacing at £1k.
Now the gearbox may potentially need replacing at £1400

Should I pay the 1400 for repair and hope I can potentially get more years out of it

Or part ex it for 2k. I have 3k in savings i could use and potentially add in some finance.

I am financially stable right now but that could change in about 2 years.

How many miles has it done
It does appear to be a money pit sadly
I would think about a Personal lease deal

I would look on google for a VW owners forum or facebook group. Search for your car.

Take all replies with a pinch of salt but it will give you a better idea as to where to invest your money.

So you'd have 5k for another car? I would start by looking at what you can get for that, and if it meets your needs.

A 2012 car is 14yo this year, so will be in the final (expensive) phase of its life no matter what model/make it is. If you can afford a newer vehicle I would do it.

136000 miles

We don't need a 7 seater anymore either.

Trade in for something Japanese like a Honda, Nissan, Toyota etc. as they run forever and rarely go wrong.

My previous car was a 2006 Honda CRV that I bought when it was 2 yrs old and it never failed an MOT and I only traded it in as it was 18yrs old and thought I should get something newer.
Really loved that car!!
Currently running a hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander which is nice to drive but not so great on fuel. 😳

My husband wants to get it repaired.

He says he doesn't think anyone would take it on part ex as the gearbox will need replacing.

You will be throwing money at your current car until you have spent all of your savings on it and then it will die completely.

I got a good PX deal on my 2011 diesel golf from Cinch a couple of years ago. Even with grading it at the bottom of the scale I think I got about £1000 more than any of the other We buy any Car type places or local dealers. I probably paid a bit more for the car I bought off them but they deliver the new car to your door and take away the old one.

You'll be able to get something that is more suitable for your needs and will probably cost less to run than a 7 seater.

Personally I’d stop throwing money at it, accept defeat and look for something newer. Even if you wanted something else for say £5-7K, if you put the £1400 you would have spent on the repair down & £1600 from savings as deposit you could finance the other £2-4K over 2 years and wouldn’t be paying crazy amounts each year.

A 12 year old car is just going to start costing you more and more money now really, it’s important to know when to stop throwing money at it and redirect instead.

InveterateWineDrinker · 25/02/2026 12:16

Which engine and gearbox combination does it have?

If it's the DQ200 dry clutch 7-speed DSG, run for the hills. They are notoriously fragile.

Hmm... I'd say that as it's 14yo and done 136K miles, it doesn't really owe you anything.

The problem you might have though, is if you keep buying older cars, with a lot of miles on the clock, then you're always going to be driving around on tenterhooks of it conking out. Could you stretch to something younger? Say, less than 5yo?

I've never bought a car new. My general rule is "under 5 years old, and less than 25K on the clock."

We just don't have the money. All the cheaper newer cars are electric and we don't have the facilities for that.

Did a check for a loan and said nothing available to us so we are literally capped at 5k including the trade in.

So would probably end upnwith another older car, possibly facing same issues.

My daughter should get high rate mobility really but we were awarded standard and just didn't fight it. We could have gotten a mobility car.
