Do you swing your arms as you walk?

I don’t, but I was walking behind a woman yesterday who did, she was swinging her arms like a marching soldier only not as stiff. She was wearing a big puffy coat so the rustly sound of her sleeves rubbing against her body made me want to rip my ears off and I wondered how she could stand it!

Do you swing your arms? Is it a conscious thing that you can stop if you wanted to?

I’ve read and reread my OP several times to see why it could come across as me having a dig at her and I’m drawing a blank. Am I not allowed to wonder how she doesn’t get annoyed by the noise of her coat rustling?!

Why didn't you ask her if you were really that interested rather than start a thread on MN about someone walking down the street minding her own business?

I’m more puzzled at how invested you are in the fact that the OP noticed how someone walked and that it made her question how much arm swinging people did.

No. Her post was about the woman annoying her by the rustling noise her arms were making.
If she wanted to ask about the style of walking where people swing their arms that is a totally different question.
There was no need to talk about the woman, what she was wearing and the fact she was annoying OP. It looks very much as though the question about the style of walking was thrown in just to justify her unpleasant observation of this woman.

But who walks like this on a normal basis

You do it for exercise. The point is that you can do it any time, with no special clothing or equipment.

Local community 'annoyed' as woman's coat rustled as she walked! Will the townspeople ever recover? Crowdfund link at foot of article.

Everyone walks differently.

Seeing people walking somewhere is a good thing for their health and for the environment.

I do swing my arms and that's because I walk at a good pace. Generally, slow walkers tend not to swing their arms.

The rustling of her coat made me notice the arm swinging so I added it as context. Why are you getting so worked up over me getting annoyed by a noise?? Confused

Came across as a dig to me.

I usually have my hands in my pockets or hooked around my bag strap (or holding the dog’s lead). I hate it when I’m wearing something with no pockets and my arms end up just sort of dangling by my sides. I have chronic fatigue and my arms and legs often feel too heavy.

Everintroverte · 25/02/2026 14:13

If I'm walking around the house or pottering around the shops I don't too much. However, if I am out and walking with purpose (either for an walk for exercise or walking to or from somewhere) then I do. I was aware of it but didn't think it looked odd until my 18yo daughter saw me from a distance. Once she realised it was me she fell about laughing and said she couldn't stop looking at the crazy lady swinging her arms and then realised it was me!

RealCoralRobin · 25/02/2026 14:20

My neighbour, her Mum and her adult daughter all swing their right arm as they walk along. It’s obviously a family trait

I wasn’t having a dig at her! I was wondering how the sound of her coat rubbing on itself didn’t drive her up the wall!

She was probably exaggerating the arm swinging to up her heart rate in order for it to be more of a cardio workout and burn extra calories.

It’s illegal to be annoyed any anything anyone else does

JulieJo · 26/02/2026 19:50

Some people will swing their arms more to improve balance. For example someone with flat feet who has arch supports will swing their arms more when they don't have their arch supports in their shoes.

canuckup · 26/02/2026 20:03

Neighbour does this

I can spot her a mile away

Only swings one arm though, like a soldier that's lost one arm.

Other than, she's harmless enough

😂

CinnamonBuns67 · 26/02/2026 20:07

Yes I do, I don't notice the sound of my big puffy coat because I'm used to it.

Maybe! Probably not though, if she said in the OP she waddled like a goose then perhaps but being heavily pregnant I most definitely don't look like a marching soldier.
