So decided to try plant seeds rather than but flowers as cheaper. I can keep them inside away from frost until warmer weather.
Ideally want to plant now / next week.

Also do I need ti start them in small pots then transfer or just put in the garden pots?

Also good soil/ compost or are they all similar.

What seeds have you got to sow?

PersonIrresponsible · 24/02/2026 11:30

Cosmos

It's still quite early for flowers, as they will need to be kept frost free. That said, things i have growing outside that have self seeded and surviving the cold are calendula, mallow, nigella and cerinthe.

Sweet peas are good to sow now

A lady I follow on Instagram did a post recently and said for cut flowers to sow the following in March
Nigella, Silene, Scabious, Bunny tails, Zinnia and Cosmos (late March or early April), Calendula,

Thank you. I can keep them frost free in the car port. I shall go to b&q tomorrow and look

The thing about flowers is that you often plant them this year to flower next year, so it’s quite a long term project. Most of them are also happiest being sown where you intend them to be rather than transplanted (for example, poppies).

Sunflowers are wonderful though and easy to start inside and transplant. I would not start them until end of March/April though because they grow too weedy and weak if left inside too long and it will be too early to plant them outside until late April/early May.

If you have the space for a small bush like flowering plant, dahlias are also great. You buy them as tubers and I would plant straight in the ground after risk of frost has passed. They flower all summer long continuously if you cut them as they die off.

It really depends on what it is you want to sow.

If you dont know you need to look for hardy annuals to sow now or half hardy annuals to sowing a few weeks or tender annuals to sow once it warms up.

Look on the seed packet for seeds to sow under cover in Feb or March if you want to sow them in pots now.

Thank you. I don't care what flowers just need a bit of color . I shall look at the packets and decide. Just trying to save money on buying pre grown plants

Op will you keep them indoors in trays and if so how long for? Or just plant seeds straight into the ground? I am wanting to do similar as you

TonTonMacoute · 24/02/2026 15:11

You can get packets with a mix of different seeds (you want annuals) which are quite good as you will be able to see which varieties do well.

As you are a beginner I would wait for a few months, prepare a nice little patch where you want the flowers, and then sow them direct, rather than fanny around with sowing indoors.

As mentioned above Nigella, cornflowers and calendula are all very easy to grow and if they like it they will self seed next year. My favourites are scabious, as bees absolutely love them. You can get them in all colours

ErrolTheDragon · 24/02/2026 15:28

Definitely sweet peas.
How about nasturtiums? They’re pretty tough, might even be ok to sow directly before long.

i have already sown my first batch of sweet peas and some cosmos but the latter may be a bit early and end up leggy.
