Does anyone have a simple microwave with stainless steel interior?

Dull topic I know!

Please let me know the make and model if you have a stainless steel or ceramic one?

My 85 year old mum goes through a microwave every two years. They go rusty inside and the paint flakes off, exposing the bare metal.

She has carers 4 x a day and I think they tend not to wipe it out after use. They also don't leave the door ajar to air.

I leave a set of microwave lids and a roll of kitchen towel on top of the microwave, but most times I visit, it needs cleaning and has a layer of water under the turntable.

So I'm after one with a stainless steel or ceramic lining. Ideally just a plain microwave, not a combination one or one with a grill. That would make it trickier to wipe out.

Any suggestions gratefully received, thanks!

Microwaves can't be coated inside with stainless steel - they wouldn't work. They absolutely require a ceramic coating. Having said that, we aren't kind to our microwave, and it's about 10 years old, so maybe a nicer microwave? Ours is John Lewis.

Maybe get a flatbed microwave without turntable? Might be easier to keep clean (ie no opportunity for pooled water under the turntable)

John Lewis own brand.

I never wipe my microwave and never leave the door open, just clean it every so often if it looks gross. I’ve never experienced what you’re describing. We’ve probably had 4 microwaves in the last 16 years and one of those was secondhand when we got it. Are you sure it’s not all the cleaning you’re doing that’s damaging it?

My Neff microwave has a stainless steel interior the same as my mothers Bosch.

Ours is stainless steel. So was my mum’s.

unfortunately op that’s no help to you - they’re at least 25 years old. Maybe second hand would be easier. Otherwise I’d ask in John Lewis.

I have a Panasonic combo microwave that’s all stainless steel. It’s lasted for years.

We have the same, I bought it well over twenty years ago and it's still going strong. Needed a couple of fixes like the door opening button but that was easily sorted. When the magnatron goes we'll replace that. It tickles my DS that our microwave is older than he is!

A stainless steel interior is the way to go. I leave the door open for a while if there's moisture on the inside but that's it, there's never water pooling in it. The Panasonic seems to be particularly bombproof, ours is a total workhorse but that might be more than you wanted to spend. But I think it's false economy getting a really cheap microwave, they don't last.

We have a Bosch model and it is stainless steel inside. I haven’t experienced what you describe OP. And I don’t understand where the water comes from. What are the carers cooking? Is it something filled to the brim with liquid in it and difficult to take out without spilling a bit?
I never need to dry the inside or leave the door open. Although the big difference is we don’t use ours anywhere near as often as in your mum’s situation.

It’s also not all that complicated to use. I know OP didn’t want a fancy one bur I think they do a non combi version too.

Ours is steel and about 35 years old.. use it mainly for reheating things. Doesn't pool water and only gets cleaned about once a month

4kinell · 25/02/2026 13:24

I had exactly the same problem , was going through loads of microwaves because of paint flaking off constantly inside . I got one with a stainless steel interior a few years ago from Tesco , it’s a breville and have had no issues with it

SuperGinger · 25/02/2026 13:26

We also have a Panasonic that is stainless steel

I love my ceramic microwave. No buttons either just dials so very easy to use. I dont think they make them any more sadly. Its a Samsung ms23f301eas.

There may be other brands that make similar.
