The downside of ev cars that I didn't think of beforehand - cables

Can I just start off by saying AAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!

I got an electric car about 4 or 5 years ago and had a charger installed. Because of the way my front garden is set up the cable that came with the charger was too short to reach my car, so I got a 10m cable. Two years ago DS passed his test and bought himself a second hand electric car that didn't have a huge range so needed frequent charging. Again because of the weird layout the 10m cable didn't reach his car so there was a bit of car juggling until I bought a 20m cable. These things are not cheap and the longer they get the more expensive they are. Then DH bought an electric car.

So far, so good. Everyone can park in their own place and the cable can reach everyone, so it's just about timing at this point. And yelling at both of them to put the cap back on and the cable away when finished charging. And reminding them to keep the cable tucked up against the car so that nobody drives over it.

In the past few days, not sure when exactly, DS left his car plugged in and left the cable flopped across DH's turning circle. DH didn't notice and drove over the cable and the cable came apart a bit at the handle. So now it doesn't work! We only got two years out of a £400 cable and have to order a new one (fortunately it's the only thing that's actually gone down in price a bit in the last few years). Apparently they can't be repaired for safety reasons because it would be a fire risk.

Everyone's grumpy because we are back to car juggling with the old 10m cable until the new one is delivered. I am slightly self soothing by working out how much we saved by using electric over petrol for the two years that the cable lasted (far more saving than the cost of the cable, fortunately) but still pissed off.

That is all. Rant over. I feel marginally better to have let it out.

DS should pay for a new cable?

I trust DS is paying for the cable? If not he has no incentive to give a stuff about putting it away tidily.

He will pay - in more than just money if I have my way. <evil cackle>

but DH drove over it, what if it was a child not a cable, who would be to blame then?

Didn't see that one coming.

Children are considerably bigger than the cable (which is less than 2cm in diameter), and generally stand out more than a black cable against dark ground.
