Does anyone else have awful food intolerance reactions?

Im so frustrated and miserable right now. I have a lot of food intolerances which just make me so ill!
I feel like noone believes me.

I accidentally ate some garlic yesterday and within an hour had migraine, debilitating fatigue and stomach cramps. It lasts for days when it happens.

Does anyone else have these reactions?

Garlic and onion DESTROY me! I had four years of agony (to the point of sleeplessness and sore throats) while the GPs just kept putting me on omeprazole. One day I discovered the FODMAP diet and cured myself. So annoying that not one GP recommended it. In fact, one of the NHS nurses told me to get a colonic irrigation!
Anyway, I’m good now but I have to be very careful what I eat. one Burger King veggie burger had me writing in agony for two weeks.

I also can only eat tiny amounts of dairy and egg since having my first child. They used to be my go-to foods. I starting to feel flu-y all the time. Again, got my bloods done and the GP said I had some inflammation. He offered me ibuprofen. I didn’t want to be taking that for the rest of my life. I was very depressed about it. My DH discovered a book written by a rheumatologist who said that a lot of inflammation is down to food intolerance. I cut everything out apart from salmon and carrots then tried every other food gradually and discovered, sadly, that my body hates dairy and eggs. No idea why. If I eat them I get shooting pains all over my body. I just make my own vegan cakes, biscuits etc. It’s not a problem for me.

I used to eat everything. Now I’m Mrs Fusspot but I’d rather be annoying and not be in constant pain.

Thank you for replying. FODMAP also saved me by identifying what were my triggers but now after avoiding everything even the tiniest thing does me in. Yesterday it was a tiny bit of garlic mayo (which I thought was normal mayo)
I know I'm going to be ill for days now.

I also think my friends think im being dramatic and pain to go for meals with (i do try and be discrete avoiding stuff)

If I accidentally eat something, I take ibuprofen, Buscopan (guts), Nexium (stomach pain) and Gaviscon (indigestion). Sometimes it takes a few days of all of them eg in the case of the rogue burger. Good luck!

I have a similar reaction to artifical sweeteners. Even a tiny bit causes a reaction now. It is so annoying that since the sugar tax even 'full fat' versions of drinks now have some sweetener in - so both the sugar free and the normal versions of the drink has sweetener in.

You have my sympathy as the migraines and debilitating fatigue are probably worse than the stomach issues for me.
I rarely tell anyone as it sounds pathetic saying lettuce, natural yoghurt, etc causes this. I did an intolerance test which helped find most of my triggers, but it’s a huge list of things to avoid.

Chickpeas are my enemy.

I feel better knowing I am not alone and the debilitating fatigue which people think is 'a bit sleepy' but actually means cannot function.

And yes to the sugar tax..loads of pubs and cafes only serving diet versions of things...argh

I can’t any allium unless it’s fresh, softened and well cooked. Fortunately it just makes me feel very nauseous and belching, lasts for 12 hours+.

Instant migraine and days in bed from a sip of artificial sweetener. Nasty stuff. I remember my first reaction at age 5 from a piece of hard candy that I had in my mouth for only a minute. I projectile vomited across the room.

Do allergy tests actually work and if so, which is the best one to use? I’m sure I’m intolerant to things (dodgy guts) butcanr quite pinpoint what it is as I’m ok some days, very much not ok others.

Firefly45 · 23/02/2026 22:59

Ive had loads of tolerance and allergy tests over the years with different results.
Doing a fodmap diet with a nutritionist is only thing that really worked. It was life changing.
I still struggle when I accidentally eat something but I am so much better than I was.
Google fodmap diet
Hard work but so worth it
