Is this normal for being paid monthly?

I started a new position in January. It's just a few hours every week to supplement my income. Pay is monthly. So I presume Januarys hours would be paid at some stage during February. Timesheets have to be in by the 1st of every month.

I got my timesheets for January in on the 31st of January which was a Saturday.

We are in the last week of February now and I haven't been paid yet for January and I never got a payslip either.

Is this normal for being paid monthly? Should I expect a payslip and a pay this week for January.

Why would they want timesheets in before the 1st of every month? Then takes them all of the next month to process the timesheets and pay.

Surely if being paid monthly, does it notake more sense to be paid in the first week or two of the following month.

I don't know what to do here. If I should send an email to my manager or what.

I have no idea how your employer works but my payroll cut off is a certain date (eg 31st January) and then anything additional I have submitted in January will be paid on the following pay day (eg 28th February).

rubyslippers · 23/02/2026 11:40

Are you paid in arrears or for the month you’ve worked
i would speak to your manager to get clarity for sure and payment dates confirmed

This is a pet peeve of mine. Lots of companies have different systems, which is fine, but they're not transparent about it up front so people land up being paid at times they didn't expect/amounts they didn't expect for the first month or two.

My guess, based on what you've said here is that the time sheets are submitted 1 Feb, processed, and then payroll probably is signed off mid feb. You'd then get paid at the end of Feb.

You 100% can and should ask your manager/ HR to please confirm the timeline. This is important not just so you understand but also, because you don't know what the actual timeline is, you don't know if an error has been made (which can be the case in the first month too).

Speak with your manager for clarification. As you are new to the firm its possible that they have forgotten to put you on the payroll.

If it's monthly then the hours you worked up til the end of January would be paid on the end of February? I think? You should ask when is payday.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 23/02/2026 11:43

You just need to ask when the pay day is. There is a week left of February and I’d expect to be paid at the end of the month so I’d expect it by Friday

I would a expect a payslip to be emailed to me at some stage today or Tuesday or Wednesday with a pay for Thursday or Friday of this week. I have no idea how it works.

Our office does online payslips and they only seem to go live at about midnight the night before we actually get paid.

I think you should ask. Something like,

"I noticed January's pay hasn't come through yet. Is it paid in arrears at the end of February and if so, can you please confirm the exact date of payment every month?"

To be honest, I think it's quite poor to pay off timesheets this far behind. DH has a similar system but they get paid the Friday after timesheets are submitted (with some weird loophole if, for example, the last day or the month is a Thursday, they only get paid 8 days later....).

Princessbananahamock · 23/02/2026 11:48

Doesn’t sound right to me. My d gets paid monthly on a set date all hours worked up to that date are paid on time.
What date does your contract state, or should we be asking do you even have a contract?

However, you really need to speak to your pay department.

Then ask. We get our payslip end of play the day before pay day, which is the last Friday of the month. It’s different everywhere, but it’s a perfectly normal question to ask. Plus if there’s been a mistake they need to no, or they can’t fix it.

Tumbler2121 · 23/02/2026 11:53

Monthly paid is usually paid at the end of the month worked, with any adjustments being made in the next month

Namechange568899542 · 23/02/2026 11:57

Depends on when you started, when the onboarding cut off was for Jan pay and when the Feb payday is. And of course whether you’ve filled in your payroll forms (I have worked in payroll and it is surprising how many people don’t fill in the form they provide their bank details on and then want to know why they haven’t been paid)

Ultimately you need to just speak to your employer. No one on MN can answer this for you as all companies are different.

Yes, I would expect January hours to be paid at the end of February as payroll is generally only run once a month.

This is not necessarily true when the monthly pay is via timesheets. They need to process timesheets and run payroll. it's entirely possible that OP's Jan payment won't appear until end Feb. I think that's poor practice, but it's not unusual. Others will pay first or second week after timesheets are submitted.

I wonder should I email them today or wait til maybe Wednesday or Thursday if this week and if I don't see a payslip in my email by then, do I send an email?

Sounds lovely ke you are working a month in hand. You should be paid on last day of February.

I would email now. Because

  1. If what I think is happening is what's happened, fine. But what if you WERE supposed to be paid 1 week after time sheets were submitted and weren't?
  2. It's a perfectly reasonable question to ask at the point at which you've already been waiting almost a month to be paid for work yuo did the month before.

Are you salaried staff, or paid for ad hoc hours?

It depends how your company does payslips. Ours is online payslips so we are never emailed or sent them. We get access to them on pay day but have to login to get them, so I won’t be getting my payslip until Thursday this week.

If you have a contract that will tell you when payday is.
It might be the last working day which would be Friday. I don’t get email payslips as we have an online system to access them.
You just need to ask your employer!

Twasasurprise · 23/02/2026 16:15

I personally wouldn't expect anything before Friday - the last working day of the month. As you weren't paid in Jan, I'd assume you'll just be paid for the Jan timesheet. I've rarely, if ever, received a payslip before the day I was paid.

Is there nothing in your contract or handbook regarding pay dates?

WindyBeech · 23/02/2026 16:25

Have you checked your contract/employee handbook? One or both should tell you pay dates, cut-offs, and when any ad hoc hours/overtime are paid.
