I have no idea who celebrities are, I don't listen to the radio or read books. I don't watch the news or buy newspapers

Just that really. I have absolutely no interest in celebs and I don't understand why anyone would.
I don't watch Saturday night TV.
I don't listen to music unless I am going for a run and then it's the same old playlist that I've had for years, although lately I do have a few 'newer' songs added.
I have read in the past, but maybe only 1-2 books a year and then I donate the book.
I have no idea of UK government ie who is who. I only know who the PM is
I have no idea what is going on politically in the world
The radio is just an annoying noise-racket with the DJ blabbering on and adverts galore. It feels like someone talking non-stop in the car when I am driving, then music is played that I might not even like.

Anyone else resonate ?

Well, if you’re happy then fine I guess…but it does all sound a bit limiting. How do you spend your free time?

CharlotteRumpling · 23/02/2026 09:03

Ok. What do you do in your spare time?
Any friends or do you have no interest in those either?

CornishPorsche · 23/02/2026 09:05

No, that sounds like a very narrow field of view in life and not one I wish to share.

BTW we're on the cusp of WW3 and already in a cold war with Russia plus an economic was created by Donald Trump (current US president if you're not sure).

That's why your food is getting more expensive if you haven't noticed.

There's a difference between having no interest in celebrities (me neither) and wilful ignorance of your surroundings IMO.

I run -a lot ! I am part of a local running group. Sometimes I help run the group too/do admin etc
I work FT and do long hours (dr)
I have 3 DC
I have lots of friends and go out with them - dinner/drinks (but never a festival/concert etc!)

Barnsleybonuz · 23/02/2026 09:06

What on earth are you interested in? I find it very bizarre not to have at least a passing interest in what’s going on in the world.

darkstone · 23/02/2026 09:06

@CornishPorsche thanks for the update - I am aware of DT !

Don’t you and your friends talk about anything to do with the news or what is happening in the world.?

Wbeezer · 23/02/2026 09:07

What do you do?
i have to keep my restless brain entertained so I always have Radio 4 or a podcast or the TV or a book ( plus my knitting) on the go. DH and I talk about the news and politics all the time, we’d be a bit stuck for interesting things to chat about if we didn’t.
you must be a very calm person! ( I’m a bit jealous).

CelticSilver · 23/02/2026 09:07

You do you 🙂

goz · 23/02/2026 09:07

Sounds like an incredibly narrow life with very limited awareness of what’s on around you.

Wonderknicks · 23/02/2026 09:08

I also have no idea who celebrities are but I am aware of the news - I read newspapers & watch the news. I just don't watch trashy TV ,(except traitors 😂😂). I think being up to date with what is going on in the world us part of being an adult. My daughter is the same as you (although she reads & does insta/tictoc) and tbh it makes her seem a bit dim, which she isn't at all (a couple of degrees to her name). She didn't really know who AMW was the other day, just a vague notion.

darkstone · 23/02/2026 09:08

@Barnsleybonuz no, never. We talk about fitness, diets, healthy eating, running, who is doing what (e.g. Linda from 3 doors down has a new bloke and her kicked our DH out), films, mini-series

Terser · 23/02/2026 09:08

I know someone with similar habits.

Sorry, but I avoid them because they're incredibly boring to talk to. Their only subject is their own life, and their life isn't very interesting.

HelpMeGetThrough · 23/02/2026 09:09

I’ve no idea who any celebrities are these days, no idea of “modern” music and don’t watch stuff like Saturday night TV or an of this reality TV bollocks.

I do know about politics in this country, not much about other countries.

Works for me.

darkstone · 23/02/2026 09:09

You can make your own world as big or as small as you like. I know who many of the celebrities are, but not soap actors or sports stars.

You don't have to justify your own interests - or lack of them - to anybody. Some people may prefer not to spend a lot of time around you if there's very little common ground; but again: your choice and their choice.

squashyhat · 23/02/2026 09:09

🏅

AwayADay · 23/02/2026 09:09

So when you are making small talk with others ( not family members ) what do you talk about ?
I have no interest in reality shows , talk shows , celeb gossip etc but I do know whos who and about politics , the news and such like .
In short I take an interest in the wider world about me and read books for enjoyment and for learning .
Without sounding rude , are you not a bit boring to know . What do you and your friends talk about ?

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 23/02/2026 09:10

Fair enough if you don't care about celebrities. But being politically clueless is not really something to be proud of. I would be utterly ashamed to say "oh I only know who the prime minister is" like it was some badge of honour.

FiveShelties · 23/02/2026 09:10

How old are your children and are they interested in what is happening in their world?

AnneLovesGilbert · 23/02/2026 09:11

You’re missing out on so much, your children are too, and you seem proud of it. I think that’s sad.

IfThen · 23/02/2026 09:12

Congratulations on modelling a total lack of intellectual curiosity to your children?

daisychain124 · 23/02/2026 09:12

This is not the flex you think it is. Absolutely peak Mumsnet. I bet you comment ‘Who????’ on any thread that mentions a celebrity.

Wonderknicks · 23/02/2026 09:12

darkstone · 23/02/2026 09:09

@Wonderknicks AMW ?

I thought you might say that. Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

scalt · 23/02/2026 09:13

YANBU. The news is toxic, it always has been. Doom and gloom sells papers, and makes the Daily Heil readers froth over their morning cornflakes, and make sideways glances at Farage, the deity who says he can fix it all. I used to be an avid listener to radio 4, until I heard “corrrrronavirus” once too often, and Johnson saying “we must squeeeeeeeeeeeeze the brakes”.

I follow a couple of political commentators, and that is all I need. I take the view that if something really important is happening in the world, I’ll find out about it one way or another. My mind is more peaceful with out the news, only occasionally shattered if I see a board with the word “misery”, such as “more weather misery”.
