Tell me what you did for your 50th!

Trips, parties, get togethers, adventures

What went really well?
What didn’t go well and why?
Anything you wish you’d done but didn’t?

Thank you!

I had a big fuss and did lots of different things for my 40th, so I wasn’t really bothered about my 50th. I didn’t tell anyone at work and told friends and DH I didn’t want a fuss, and it was lovely. I opened some presents first thing, then we took a three year old away for the weekend, doing things that three year olds find enjoyable, and it was just right.

Pennyplant19 · 22/02/2026 20:17

Got an elderly rescue dog. Best present ever 🥰

First month of lockdown

BeMellowAquaSquid · 22/02/2026 20:18

Haven’t had mine yet but I share my 50th with my youngest 18th so already agreed we’re going to have one hell of a party 🎉

CandyflossKid · 22/02/2026 20:21

Always wanted a party for my 50th Birthday......... unfortunately it was in 2021 so couldn't.

However, I did have a small get together in the garden with maximum of 30 people.

CountryGirlInTheCity · 22/02/2026 20:25

It was Summer of the first lockdown. They’d just started allowing families to be together in the same house for a visit but not stay overnight. Our lovely DS and his then fiancée travelled nearly three hours to spend the day with me and three hours back at night. First time I’d seen them in person in months. We had a lovely day together and DH had organised afternoon tea and other lovely treats. Some friends came and stood in our back garden to sing happy birthday and then went home again.

DS and DIL got married the following month in a socially distanced wedding of 30. It was wonderful ❤️

Ended up in Costco carpark eating a slightly squashed hot dog...it was around lockdown time.

We're shit at birthday celebrations.

VenusClapTrap · 22/02/2026 20:26

Big party in the garden, joint do with a friend who shares my birthday. Had my favourite caterers do the food so we could enjoy ourselves instead of ‘hostessing.’ Lots of fun.

Then went to Paris with Dh and the kids and had dinner in the Jules Verne restaurant up the Eiffel Tower. It was during the Olympics, and we had a view of the beach volleyball going on below, then the light show, then a massive electrical storm going on around us. It was fantastic.

Samewrinklesnewname · 22/02/2026 20:30

Yet another lockdown 50th here so feck all instead of the lovely big family holiday we’d planned.

Dh was 60 last year and I took him to New York for a week

Johnogroats · 22/02/2026 20:32

Height of Covid. I had 3 zoom parties with posted cocktails.

Greentrilby · 22/02/2026 20:33

My husband had just died and I was in shock but I recall sitting in the garden with my parents and kids and eating birthday cake and I got terribly drunk. Just what I needed really. Since then I’ve celebrated every birthday in a big way - food ,fizz, family and lots of fuss. A birthday is a privilege and needs to be celebrated. Hope whatever you decide to do OP you have a fab time.

Sheknowsaboutme · 22/02/2026 20:33

Nothing. Ususl day. Was a Saturday, tidied the house, went to the gym, watched DS in a football match and came home.

Allowingthebreezethroughmyhair · 22/02/2026 20:34

I am planning a month long trip through Asia with my husband and two children.

julesagain · 22/02/2026 20:41

A quite day and a takeaway with my Mum and my children. That was January 2021, so lockdown number 3.

SparkyBlue · 22/02/2026 20:47

It’s coming up this summer and I want it totally relaxed and low key I hate big fusses. Nice lunch out and drinks and that’s it. DH is also 50 soon so we plan on doing a few extra trips this year and upgrading the car and doing a few nice things for ourselves.

Makingmusicinmy50s · 22/02/2026 21:07

Mine was just as the first lockdown was coming to an end and things started to open up, but still very limited on options.

I took up an instrument a year before I was 50, (the goal was to be able to learn to read music and to play something simple when I reached 50). I played a very simple concerto on my own in my living room on the morning of my birthday and was so pleased :-) Luckily all my lessons moved on to zoom during lockdown and I had lots of extra time to practise.

That was followed by an open water swim at London's Royal Docks with a friend who goes every week (I'd never been). It was a very warm day so I had high hopes... Never again! I was clinging on to the edge barely able to breath for the first 15 minutes with cold water shock. By the time my body got used to the temperature, I struggled to swim in the pitch black water knowing there were eels swimming with me. Nope.

A very nice day overall though.

Pericombobulations · 22/02/2026 21:10

Yet another lockdown birthday here too.

TBH I didnt have huge plans, DH ordered me a millenium falcon cake which was fabulous.

TheFallenMadonna · 22/02/2026 21:10

Nothing much, because it was December 2020 and we were in tier 4. By April and DH's 50th, we were allowed a cold, damp takeaway in our friends' garden 😊

Needlenardlenoo · 22/02/2026 21:11

Rented a house and stayed there with friends for a weekend.

It all went really well. The only thing I'd have done differently is to have someone to heat/serve the food.

staringatthesun · 22/02/2026 21:12

I went with family and some friends on a safari in Kenya. Had a smallish party when we got back.

Loopylalalou · 22/02/2026 21:13

Had a party for 50 in our garden. We all had a blast and the dog was sick after eating too many sausages.

LeapyearLoser · 22/02/2026 21:14

Both me and my husband turned 50 2017.
I was 2 years post cancer treatment so the whole year was a celebration!
We went on sleeper to Inverness looked for Nessy, hotel was over priced, sleeper was over priced but it was a fun experience.
We went to Vegas to renew our wedding vows with our sons, Johnny Cash officiated. We met friends in New York for thanksgiving.
I gave myself a party at local pub. It was a fun year, thankful we reached 50 together surrounded by those we love and like.

Im a firm believer in the adage its a privilege to get older.

Do what you want and love x

FabulousWealthyTart · 22/02/2026 21:15

House party till 4am with my friends and our respective children ( who were also friends with each other). It was during school holidays and we still talk about it now, 15 years later. Fantastic time.

frozendaisy · 22/02/2026 21:15

Went to New York
Hamilton on Broadway

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 22/02/2026 21:18

I went abroad for the first time since I was 20. Its was a 2 week cruise in the sun.
