Work in university access or admissions. Some chose it, some there as that was what they could get. Some have interesting activities outside work eg in a band, stand up comedian, event photographer.

I think what’s key is professional experience. Get an internship or a volunteer role or a PT job related to an area of work they’re interested in pursuing. Build an interesting CV and professional contacts in an area of interest. Consider self employment and building some business skills.
