I am cycling to France and on day 3 I shall be on the outskirts of Southampton

and then cycling on to Portsmouths, so just a short ride for that day and I can't check into my accommodation until 3pm in Portsmouth

I'm looking for any great recommendations for breakfast in Southampton on a Sunday morning, prefrably somewhere you've eaten yourselves and no is good. Also though I want to be able to park my bike outside and lock up unfortunately I won't be able to leave my bike, so if I can't have the bike outside Im not able not stop

I like porridge, eggs on toast, beans on toast, omelette, bagels, fruit toast etc (not really into a full English)

any help appreciated

Harpers Steakhouse in Swanwick is great. Its on the road out of Southampton towards Portsmouth. Rude Coffee is also nice and a smaller cafe place. Really good food. Its in Park Gate a bit further on than Harpers but not much out of the way.

With the caveat that mostly what I have had in these two places is a full English: Mettricks in Woolston and Cherrywood Kitchen in Netley. Both are on the east side of the city - Netley is just outside Southampton - so in the right direction for Portsmouth. Not sure what the locking up bicycle situation is for the latter. I think there may be bike racks slightly further down the road, but you could ring them. Mettricks is above an underground car park. Not sure if there are bike racks there. There are railings outside you could lock your bike to - it's in a pedestrian courtyard.

Depending on your route. If you go via the Hamble-Warsash Pink Ferry, try the Beach Hut Cafe at Hamble. Or head further down to the Bayside Cabin at Stokes Bay. Then take the ferry from Gosport to Portsmouth.
Both have space to park a bike outside and outside tables.

Yes, Cherrywood in Netley. The owners and staff are super friendly and would probably let you bring the bike in, plus there’s tables outside too. The food is AMAZING and exactly what you’re after and the coffee is excellent!

Cherrywood, looks like it’s virtually on my route through, looks good - thanks

Mine are both on your route too. You can have a course at each one!

You’ll need a break if you are riding over the Itchen Bridge, it’s pretty steep.

I’ve just looked at the elevation for the route as my route, it’s 67 meters of climbing on the entire route, it’s fine compared to the previous miles 😌

Sounds like an amazing trip. When do you go?

LoisPrice · 20/02/2026 09:12

I’m going mid April, just booking the accommodation, which is an interesting task! Got as far as Vitre in France

I ended up staying at Chilworth Manor - which was excellent ( didn’t eat there)

had tea the day before in Fig and Fox at Romsey - which was delicious

had to go to Evan’s in Southampton for some bike stuff and as I was cycling through the city I stopped there for some breakfast as was hungry

thanks for all the suggestions, I did find the costal ride rather interesting, especially the two ferry rides
