What to dress newborn in early march?

We live in the north east and the wind is very chilli. I have a multitude of short sleeve bodysuits and long sleeve sleepsuits to go over (newborn & 0-3 months), hats, scratch mits and a few knitted cardigans that have been gifted.

Will a long sleeve bodysuit fit underneath a sleepsuit or will it be too much and scrunchy?

we also have a few knitted and a few cellular blankets

do I need a pram suit? I know he will be warm indoors with the sleep suit and blanket but what about getting him to the car? I know you should not put them be in pram suits or coats in the car seat.

so how do I dress him for transition periods where it’s cold outside? What about in the baby carrier? We plan to go on walks in the baby bjorn… in which case does he need a pram suit or snowsuit or will he go into my
coat?

thanks so much

A car seat blanket is really useful. They are special blankets with holes to pass the straps through, and then you strap baby in and wrap the blanket over strap. It’s safe because blanket is not between baby and straps. Stays on better than a blanket just over the top. The same or a footmuff for the buggy. A snowsuit is not really necessary until they are coming out of the buggy to play or if you are using a sling maybe. If you have one of those coats with an extendable panel that the sling can go inside that should work fine.

Congratulations on your baby.
You'll know if he's cold. Layers are always a good choice.
In the cold mine would be in the same clothes but with more layers so -

  • short sleeve bodysuit
  • sleepsuit on top
  • maybe cardigan if chilly in the house
That's all in the house.
  • if in the sling, obviously a hat as well. Then maybe some leggings on top of their sleepsuit
  • never a padded suit or coat when carrying, only ever in the pram
  • I had a clip round cover for my carriers that had a fleece lining that could be removed. Your body will be Keep them warm so no need to go overboard. When tiny they'd be inside my coat

For getting to the car I'd have the car seat in the house so pop them in and then add hat and blanket.

DD was born in NE in March - she generally wore a short sleeve body suit with a long sleeved and footed sleep suit over the top and a cardigan as needed. We didn’t have a pram suit and just put a hat, jacket and blankets on her.

We never had one but those star shaped baby wraps look quite good for carrying in a baby carrier.

Mine were winter babies

Will a long sleeve bodysuit fit underneath a sleepsuit or will it be too much and scrunchy?

Yes. They layer nicely.
Don't make the classic mistake of sizing up too slowly if you have a high centile baby.
0-3m is just a guide. My dd was in 6-9 at 4m

You may well get little to no use
Get one off vinted in 0-3m for a few pounds and save your £££ for a 9-12 m next winter...

Pram suit - get a double zip one this is great because if they fall asleep in the pram and you come indoors you can just leave them lying unzip it and pop an arm or two out.

When we did carrier the mat coat zips over them
We put them in a fleecy onesie on top of regular cotton one then into carrier with your coat it should be fine.
Make sure you are properly dressed too so baby's airways is clear.

Remember that a sling counts as a layer of clothing. So would your coat.

On the flip side, if they're a low centile baby then the 0-3 absolutely drowns them!! My third baby was still in 0-3 at 6 months old. He's now over 2 and only in 12-18 😁.

I bought a sleeping bag type thing on my pram, had holes in it so it fitted properly and snugly - other than that it was the tee shirt onesie with a sleep suit on top. Never bothered with proper clothes on babies until they were bigger. We did have a fleece suit for winter (born early September and late March ) so weee a bit older and going in the swings etc, plus went to Scotland quite frequently

This is true!!!

My 2 yr old still has a few 12-18m floating around in the clothes drawer...

Look up the Star Wrap. It's halfway between a blanket and a pram suit and really easy to pop a newborn in and out of.

March can still be really cold so you need to just wait and see, I would generally do long sleeve vest, sleepsuit and a light fluffy pramsuit with a blanket in the pram.
He would probably still need a cardigan indoors, a sleepsuit and cellular blanket is likely not enough unless your home is always above 20.

In the carrier, long sleeve vest, knit 2 piece outfit, soft jacket, knitted booties and a hat.
