No phones on ski trip

DD is going on a ski trip with school next week. We've just been informed they won't be allowed to use their phones during the day, only for an hour in the evening.
Would you be happy with your DC not being allowed to take their phones on the slopes?

I think it's mad, and I'm trying to formulate a mail which doesn't sound over protective pub! It means they can't call if they get separated from the group, check the map, if they injure themselves. What if the visibility is bad? Am I overreacting here?

OP posts:

The thought of a compulsory ski trip makes me feel quite ill. Where in the world does that get mandated?!

whynotwhatknot · 18/02/2026 13:09

wha law states someone has to do a trip

no such thing

I would guess OP is in the Nordics or somewhere equally snowy, and that teaching ski-ing as a life skill is similar to a UK school sorting out swimming lessons.

madnessitellyou · 18/02/2026 13:12

Yes that does make sense.

I have made a mental note never, ever to move there!

Islandofmisadventure · 18/02/2026 13:13

Yes you are over reacting. I would be more than happy for my phone-obsessed child to have to abide by those rules.

BotterMon · 18/02/2026 13:15

Well done that school. Why on earth would they need their phones whilst on the slopes with friends and ski teachers? At least they'll be concentrating on what they're doing rather than pouting for selfies.
You are being quite ridiculous.

When DS went on a school ski trip they weren’t allowed to take their phones at all. DS was 11 the first time. I think it’s a good thing. If they needed to speak to parents urgently they used a teacher’s phone.

i gave examples of 2019. learn to count please

2019 is 6 years ago and you are literally scraping the barrel with your examples.

Many people have pointed this out to you but you continue to double down.

Now you have pivoted and it is that English is not your first language. Nor is it mine but it doesn’t prevent critical analysis. For someone who works in legal/compliance as you said you should know this.

@AreTheyMad it seems the trip is compulsory - is that correct? Does that mean that the level of skill of the accompanying adults is already confirmed to be at a sufficient level ie if skiing is common in your geographical location?

dapsnotplimsolls · 18/02/2026 13:24

If, as OP's updates suggest, her DD could be going on black runs/off-piste/away from others then she absolutely should have her phone with her.

VeryQuaintIrene · 18/02/2026 13:28

I'm really impressed with the school for doing this.

travelallthetime · 18/02/2026 13:28

are you in the UK?

Don’t be , it’s an incredibly common policy.

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/02/2026 13:35

Sounds excellent

my ds is off on a school trip to Spain and they are banned from taking phones at all

Personally I would suspect a child with a known medical issue would be allowed a phone strictly for emergency reasons. This phone doesn't need to be a smart phone though - it's strictly for a call. I would also say that the teacher should be within easy contact distance at a known location regardless anyway exactly because kids can't be trusted to ensure their phone is charged / not run out of battery because they've been tiktoking all day.

Did had no known medical condition at the time. We now know she has low blood pressure and hadn’t drunk enough.

BuildbyNumbere · 18/02/2026 13:39

Sounds like a massive over reaction. The phone is likely to get lost or broken when skiing anyway and doubtful they will get lost and have to track their way back via map … there will be teachers and ski staff all over the place 🤷🏻‍♀️

Good luck to the teachers on the journey!

The phones won’t likely get list or broken. But it’s better they are without them. Focus on the trip. And on the sport. Not SM, selfies or calling home.

Gentlydoesit2 · 18/02/2026 13:42

Massively overreacting I'm afraid.
Is be interested to know how old you are and how old your daughter is.
Also do you suffer with anxiety?

GreenChameleon · 18/02/2026 13:43

Sounds like a very sensible rule!

WimbyAce · 18/02/2026 13:43

Mine doesn't have a phone anyway so no issues here! Why is everyone obsessed with their child having a phone?!

vixen996 · 18/02/2026 13:45

Yes you’re overreacting. I went skiing with the school in my teens and didn’t have a phone and I survived! They will be in small groups and will have an adult with them, so they won’t get separated. Plus they stick to the main slopes

itsthetea · 18/02/2026 13:46

You are overreacting

Hankunamatata · 18/02/2026 13:49

My dc were allowed phones and I told him def do not take it on the slopes. Would have been happy for no phones on the trip tbh
I wish school would ban phones too

mummybear35 · 18/02/2026 13:50

We all went on school ski trips in the 80s and no one had mobile phones, we were fine. My daughter recently was volunteering in Tanzania for a few weeks, no mobile phones so had to rely on updates from the team leaders when ever they could…they survived. I think you need to loosen the apron strings or run the risk of becoming a helicopter parent (hovering over the kids!) I suspect this is it the first nor the last trip that the school has done with kids so I think you’re over reacting..

RebeccaRedhat · 18/02/2026 13:54

Massively over reacting yes.
