Smear results normal

I got mine on the nhs app, has anyone else received them this way ? Just wanted to ask what “high risk hpv not detected” actually means ? Do they only look for this and not actual cancer cells ?

Anyway had a lovely nurse this morning and it was no trouble at all. Results wait is six weeks here in Scotland

When does the 5 year change kick in?

I had my smear in January and was told next one would be in 5 years provided all came back okay (which it did - came back negative for high risk HPV or however they phrase it now)

The nurse said of course they'll see you if you have any concerns before next screening is due.

I think it's evidence based to switch to five years. Though I'm Irish and given the Cervical smear controversy there where women weren't given the correct results and some sadly died, it's understandable that women are a bit wary.

Yes I'm sceptical after the scandal , we watched too many women needlessly die

I'm in my 50s, and would have moved to every 5 years anyway because of my age, except I'm currently on annual recalls because of positive HPV. No idea when I picked it up - I had annual recalls for a while in my early 30s, but that was because of abnormal cells - they hadn't started doing the HPV testing then. So it could have been before then, or more recently. I've never been vaccinated against HPV, as it wasn't available in my youth.

Sensible to get smears, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't keep an eye on any other symptoms if you got them.

Hi can you elaborate on this further as I’m confused how women over 35 are at risk for more non hpv cervical cancers ? What are other causes of it ?
I left school in 2006 and it wasn’t long until they started giving the vaccine so I literally just missed it, which is annoying !

The older style smear tests used to check every sample for cell changes. They also used to take a hpv swab at the same time.

Now it's only the hpv swab and they have a 'look' with the speculum for any obvious changes.

I've never tested positive for hpv but with the old style smear, they picked up cell changes on my sample. It was cin3 which is 1 level away from cancer.

I had absolutely no symptoms and had I received the new hpv only smear, my cell changes would have been missed. I'd probably be dead by now!

They changed the smear after the vaccine roll out was successful and there was a massive reduction in HPV cancers. Unfortunately all the other types of cervical cancers and changes are no longer detected on the smears so we are left to get on with it unless we have symptoms. It's all about saving the nhs money and those that didn't receive the vaccine are a lost cause as we're a much higher risk of both hpv and non hpv types of cancers and only the hpv one is being tested for.

There was huge confusion at the time of the scandal but the rate of false negatives in Ireland turned out to be totally in line with international standards.

Might be sooner though but there are delays at present here.

We dont have an app either in Scotland!

Halphabetty · 21/02/2026 08:14

Yes that's correct as well. No app - the results come through the post. Though there are Royal Mail delays in my area so I suppose it will be more like 7 weeks.

Sux2buthen · 21/02/2026 08:36

I had my 6 month test of cure yesterday after having the LLETZ procedure in August. Crossing me fingers no HPV or anything else this time!
Not relevant to the original post really but when it came up in my feed it felt timely Smile
