Cheaper way of getting Windows/Word package?

I’ve finally bought my first laptop, which I’ll be using for emails, a bit of life admin (mainly letters/tax returns etc) and surfing the net.

Looking at subscriptions for Microsoft- and they all seem to be about £85 a year - or more - per device.

Is this how people generally do this? Or is there a cheaper way? Even for more than 1 device?.

Feeling old, grumpy, non-tech-savvy & skint!

I can’t remember the price, but it was definitely cheaper, via Groupon.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 17/02/2026 19:46

Yeah girl you can buy it via groupon. Which is what I did

It’s free if you have an Outlook account. You can only use the online versions but absolutely fine if you save to your OneDrive cloud account that’s part of the Outlook email account.

Try LibreOffice. It's free software that's been around for years and is Office compatible.

AlwaysPerplexed · 17/02/2026 19:48

Try OpenOffice instead of Microsoft office, it's free and just as good

Usually the laptop comes with Windows (which should be free anyway)

Free for the online webpage based apps with 5 gig of cloud space. You can also use smartphone apps with that

It won’t work without a web connection, and there are some limitations in comparison to the full desktop apps, but for general basic use you have described this would do the job

There is the option of a one off purchase of the desktop versions at £119.99 which gives you Office 2024.

The subscription gives Office 365 which gives the latest updates throughout the subscription

Other free alternatives mentioned by other users can be used if you prefer desktop capability (without the need for an active connection)

Free Microsoft 365 Online | Word, Excel, PowerPoint

With Microsoft 365 for the web you can edit and share Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote files on your devices using a web browser.

Groupon! I was paying for years every month and then found this. Think it cost me about £20. Followed the instructions- all sorted!

DaveWatts · 17/02/2026 20:10

Do you really need the whole Microsoft suite? If it's just for writing the odd letter/doing personal accounts etc I'd just use Google Docs and Sheets. Free and just as good for the everyday stuff, plus it's all web-based so you don't need to download anything.

ChilledProsecco · 17/02/2026 20:10

Thanks for all the advice. I had previously bought a Groupon but when downloaded it was for “institutional or corporate” customers only so didn’t work - urgh.

I’ll check out the link above - thanks again

Groupon one works. You have to follow the instructions and code given but I paid £8- been totally fine

HerosUncle · 17/02/2026 21:21

I got a moody one from eBay

ChilledProsecco · 17/02/2026 21:23

Righty, I’ve just got the Groupon link above - fingers crossed!

Get deal on Woucher. It's a fraction of the price.
