GCSE Chemistry Tutor

Can anyone help?! I’m looking for a GCSE Chemistry tutor for my DS and/or recommendations for online resources. He achieved all 8’s and 9’s in his mocks apart from Chemistry which he achieved a 5.

I tutor for chemistry (though I don’t have any space for more private students at the moment), I’d say the main thing to start is identifying where he’s losing the marks, and then working on that.

For such a big drop from other subjects I’d imagine there’s something fairly basic that he’s not ‘got’. His teacher should be able to help but if not CGP do ‘10 minute quiz’ books for most exam boards, which might help identify which areas need work.

Once you know what it is (or if you already do) I’d usually suggest the CGP revision guide and practice workbook, then once he’s more confident, past paper questions - ‘physics and maths tutor’ website do these go each exam board broken down into topics.

If revision from the revision guide isn’t working YouTube searching ‘gcse chemistry’ plus the exam board and the topic usually throws up loads of results and he can choose a content creator he finds understandable (pause and make notes though, just watching will not stick for most).

Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for responding. We haven’t had much feedback from his teacher and my DS doesn’t seem to know where he has gone wrong himself.

Has he had his mock papers back? If he doesn’t have copies could be maybe ask to photograph them at break or something?

If/when you find a tutor they’ll be able to take a look and spot what needs working on, that will save time identifying the areas to go over.

What exam board and specification is it?

He has seen the mock paper but doesn’t have a copy of it. I am going to ask the teacher for a copy. The exam board is AQA. Not sure re specification. Will ask him tomorrow as he’s asleep now (we’re out of the country in a different time zone at the moment).

We home ed, and really struggled to find a tutor. But DS loved Crash Course Chemistry with Hank Green. It's American but really upbeat and he learnt loads. Seneca and Primrose Kitten are both brilliant too.

Hi Lozzybear,
I’d be really interested in helping 😊 I’m a medical student with a strong background in Chemistry.
I offer online sessions and can tailor them to his exam board and specific weak areas from his mocks.
Feel free to message me if you’d like to discuss further — I’d be very happy to help
