Would you cancel birthday party - measles?

DD turns one this week, we’d planned to have family round to celebrate. My DNieces and DNephews however live in the borough with an outbreak at the moment. We’re in a different county entirely.

DD is yet to have her 12 month vaccinations. Nieces and nephews are all vaccinated. Obviously happy to postpone if there’s a risk but embarrassed to say I’m not entirely sure how the vaccinations and herd immunity work.

Would you go ahead?

Everyone is vaccinated so it should be ok.
I think I would only postpone if a child in their classes had come down with measles.

saltandvinegarpringles · 16/02/2026 21:53

If they’re vaccinated I wouldn’t think twice.

xOlive · 16/02/2026 21:57

If they’re all vaccinated with both doses, your little one should be fine!

Itsmetheflamingo · 16/02/2026 21:59

Of course! You wouldn’t cancel just because they live in the same borough as an outbreak but no other link?

Overthebow · 16/02/2026 22:00

They’re vaccinated still be fine. If they weren’t vaccinated I wouldn’t have them round.

I would go ahead, your nieces and nephews are vaccinated and so are the adults I would assume, so the risk is extremely small

Absolutely wouldn't think twice if they're vaccinated.

canuckup · 16/02/2026 22:25

Er, no, your DD isn't vaccinated???

Er, no, your DD isn't vaccinated???

She is too young to have had both doses of the MMRV.

The immunity from the mother’s placenta lasts until 15 months old, last I saw.

If all the other children have been vaccinated then there is no risk to the OP's child.

Clearinguptheclutter · 16/02/2026 22:33

you are over thinking
I thought you were going to say your dc actually has measles

Ophy83 · 16/02/2026 22:34

If they are vaccinated they are unlikely to get it and also unlikely to spread it, but it is still possible

I would ask their parents to be vigilant for any early symptoms (as this is the infectious stage) -

  • a high temperature
  • a runny or blocked nose
  • sneezing
  • a cough
  • red, sore, watery eyes

and say you would rather postpone than risk it.

She’s also breastfed, unsure if that has any effect? She’s not had any dose of the vaccination yet.

DP is apprehensive about it, me less so.

I wouldn't cancel in those circumstances.

TartanMammy · 16/02/2026 23:27

I wouldn't cancel. Nephews are vaccinated, they've not been unwel? Have the party. I say this as someone whose ds had measles at 11 months old.

Yes that will be protecting her as well as she’ll be getting some immunity from your breastmilk
