Would you claim this refund?

I brought a flexible train ticket, and booked a seat on a specific train.

In the event I got an earlier train and all went smoothly, but the train I'd booked was delayed, meaning I'm "entitled" to a refund of about £20. Would you claim it?

No. You were not delayed or inconvenienced so no need to claim a refund.

purpleme12 · 16/02/2026 18:20

No

Harhar · 16/02/2026 18:22

No. Also, the process is a pain in arse.

SirQuaverofSkips · 16/02/2026 18:22

No I wouldn't as it would feel dishonest to me but then again I don't need an extra £20.

It would be fairly easy to justify it to yourself if you are cash strapped I would imagine - train travel is shit, routinely cancelled and over priced. For every time you can recover your £20 without a real basis there will be 100 times where you have inconvenience that you can't recover money for.

If you are asking, sounds like you are uncomfortable about it so don't.

PrincessofWells · 16/02/2026 18:23

No, that would be dishonest . . .

ImPamDoove · 16/02/2026 18:26

No, why would I?

hexsnidgett · 16/02/2026 18:28

No and I think they can tell if you went through the barriers and when, so you probably wouldn't get it anyway.

Clefable · 16/02/2026 18:29

I would Grin

AnnaQuayRules · 16/02/2026 18:30

Of course not.

OchreSwan · 16/02/2026 18:30

If you bought a flexible train ticket and went on an earlier train then you are in fact not entitled to a refund. The seat booking you had for the later train is neither here nor there.

I know that, that why I said "entitled", but I've had an email from the company that sold me the ticket telling me I'm entitled.

Fwiw the ticket never went through a barrier, the only time it was checked was on the train, and, if I'd signed up to Delay Repay before the trip, it would have been paid automatically.

I personally wouldn’t. But if it were a friend or family member who was struggling financially I’d tell them to go for it.

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 16/02/2026 18:44

I would.

Rockstick · 16/02/2026 18:50

No. Also, the process is a pain in arse.

No it's not, it's a couple drop down boxes and upload a photo.

TheShiningCarpet · 16/02/2026 18:56

Yep I would as small compensation for all the other delayed and cancelled trains I've had to pay a fortune for

TheShiningCarpet · 16/02/2026 18:58

Also if it makes you feel better if you made an error in good faith they would fine you without hesitation

plasbks · 16/02/2026 18:59

No, I think it would be fraudulent. You would be claiming for a delay you didn’t suffer. How is that not fraud?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 16/02/2026 19:05

I wouldn’t, the delay didn’t affect you at all and your train journey went fine. Why would you?

Mcdhotchoc · 16/02/2026 19:11

I would and do.
Regular commuter. There are enough journeys that are delayed that don't qualify.

ladyamy · 16/02/2026 19:12

No, as you weren’t inconvenienced

MrsPositivity1 · 16/02/2026 19:14

🙄

Nopenousername · 16/02/2026 19:18

I would. Rules are rules and if you are entitled to some of the money back then you should claim it. Railway is all private at the end of the day so you are not ripping off the taxpayer but claiming what is lawfully yours.

strange25 · 16/02/2026 19:25

Yes I would!

Harhar · 16/02/2026 19:26

Rockstick · 16/02/2026 18:50

No it's not, it's a couple drop down boxes and upload a photo.

Oh well, do it then.

PJ98 · 16/02/2026 19:36

If you booked a flexible ticket, even if you had a seat on a specific train, you're not entitled to a refund. It will let you request one, but they do check all requests and it would be rejected. A seat booking is irrelevant.
