Nerf gun

I bought my DNephew 7 a gun similar to a Nerf gun in Sainsbury’s at the weekend. His mum took it off him as apparently he’s not allowed guns, I didn’t know this.

So, what’s so wrong with guns? This had soft pellets. My mum also doesn’t like catapults.

I agree on the whole but these toys can be annoying inside a house in February!

Someone bought my dc a nerf machine gun. Completely nuts and enormous! Ds likes it but we really can’t use it in the house so it’s in the garage til spring

Nothing is wrong with them imo but others disagree. To some, a gun is a gun. And bad.

Not everyone is ok with their kids having guns as toys. We were, a bit later than some of their friends, but some parents don’t like it. Always wise to check with parents before getting toy guns.

And of course they have soft pellets - it’s not that they can do actual bodily harm that is the worry. It’s more about guns being seen as harmless toy.

Just check another time before giving toy weapons. Loads of kids have them and parents are fine with it, but not all are and you should check and respect parents wishes in future.

It was a bit tricky to check as my DNephew was trying to persuade me to buy it and give excuses to his parents. I honestly had no idea his mum was against guns though or I’d never have bought it! It was the last one there and he instantly gravitated towards it, forbidden fruit I guess.

Some people don’t want their kids playing with toy weapons, each to their own.

You didn’t no, now you do, no harm done.

We bloody love a good Nerf battle in our house. Pretty sure it doesn't mean any of the children are going to have the urge to get a real gun and snipe everyone.

I was the mum who wasn’t going to have a son who plays with guns.
But we now have a whole artillery of nerfs. He’s had so much fun with them, playing with his friends and his sister - in fact the whole family. Years of entertainment, so that showed me.

You got played he knew and wanted to to be in the frame

ImthatBoleyngirl · 16/02/2026 13:10

In my experience, boys will turn anything into a gun. Sticks, umbrellas, cuddly toys........ 🤣

I know a couple of parents who tried the no gun thing, they gave up when it was summer and all the kids wanted to have water gun fights!

Haha little rotter! He played his auntie.

Ours absolutely adored them at that age. They played with them at a friends house and there was a year or so of arms race where they just wanted bigger and bigger nerf guns. Eventually he used birthday money to buy a stupidly large one he couldn’t even hold properly, he tried to play with it for a while, and fairly swiftly reverted back to a much more sensible playable with one. We had a full on armory in the corner of the living room for quite a while.

He definitely played me! Thing is water pistol fights in the summer as others have said, they’re harmless and fun.

That’s what I think. Kids have played cowboys and Indians with guns and spears for decades. Doesn’t mean they want to be a cowboy and shoot a gun.

Totally agree - but not everyone is ok with them, it’s an emotive subject and it’s generally better to check with parents rather than saying “I think it’s fine for these reasons so I’ll go ahead”.

(harder to check when nephew is being all excited in the shop! I’d have been the same before kids and realising there was a Thing about checking re nerf guns).

Needmorelego · 16/02/2026 14:13

I hate toy guns.
As in I hate the ones that look like actual guns. The purpose of those guns is to kill (whether war or hunting).
Nerf guns, water guns or paint ball guns I don't have an issue with. They aren't for killing they are for playing a game.
To me they are no worse than any other "you're out" games like tag or capture the flag.
However not everyone agrees.
Apologise to your sister/sister in law and forget about it.

Gnomer · 16/02/2026 14:16

Tell her he 'needs' it because he's hoping to do shooting in the Olympics when he's an adult.
