Shortbread mould in the oven or am I mad?

Raspberried · 16/02/2026 09:35

I need some advice please! I bought this shortbread mould second hand, no instructions. Yesterday I used it to shape the shortbread and then tipped it out onto a baking tray to bake. It kept some of the form but not amazing.

Can I put the mould in the oven? It's made of some sort of plastic, possibly resin??

Ok apparently the photo is under review

Pop it in the oven without shortbread for five minutes and see if it melts/smokes?

Abra1t · 16/02/2026 09:39

Could it be silicone? In which case, it's fine for the oven.

I am sort of tempted to shove it in the oven...

Definitely not silicone

It pleases me to think Scottish people are spending their Monday mornings making thistle-imprinted shortbread.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 16/02/2026 09:42

I suddenly want a thistle shortbread mould more than anything I’ve ever wanted.

I can’t even eat shortbread.

snowibunni · 16/02/2026 09:47

The dough needs to be cold and the mould/shortbread chilled before taking out of the mould.
If it's a stone/ceramic mould you should be okay leaving it in the mould but cook at a low temp (150/160 ish)

Disclaimer - I'm not Scottish!

AFieldOfStars · 16/02/2026 09:51

I wouldn't put it in the oven unless you're certain that it's safe to do so. Some things, especially plastics, can degenerate and produce toxic byproducts on heating.

medievalmadonna · 16/02/2026 09:56

No, I don't think it goes in the oven. It's essentially like a cookie or biscuit press, used to shape or decorate the dough before baking. The ceramic ones can go in the oven, but resin or wood just needs a good dusting with flour, press dough into it, tip out and bake on sheet.
BTW if it's like this one from Etsy, it's also reversible, so you get a pattern on both sides https://www.etsy.com/de-en/listing/1855902947/vintage-1970s-resin-shortbread-cookie?etsrc=sdt&epik=dj0yJnU9NjdCazRMMjl3RTRzVVRlUWxpLVRkcXYxM0tnQU8xYTkmcD0wJm49eXUtRHBuRWNrN1pGRy0yUl93R3lDZyZ0PUFBQUFBR21TNlgw

I just did a reverse image search of your photo and lots of similar examples came up. Probably worth you doing and having a look through the ones for sale for clues about usage.

Hi,
If it is resin, it would be for moulding rather than baking. I love making shortbread and have a wee collection of moulds.

I have wooden shortbread moulds - petticoat tails, thistles and individual chookie birdies. I don't put any of them in the oven. Very light dusting of flour in mould, press the shortbread mixture in, then place a lined baking tray on top. Gently flip it over and release shortbread from mould. The chookies get turned out one by one.

My stoneware ones go in the oven and the shortbread bakes and is left to rest/cool for 10 mins or so before tipping out.

I'm just heading out now but your post has inspired me to make some shortbread tomorrow. Good luck with the mould. It's beautiful. 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

FedUpToTheBackTooth · 16/02/2026 10:04

To be honest, it looks like some sort of plastic to me so I would change your shortbread method instead. You could try putting the shaped shortbread on the baking tray in the fridge for 30 mins before you bake it? Or very slightly decreasing the amount of butter? Baking at a lower temp?

Raspberried · 16/02/2026 10:10

Ok thanks very much everyone! I will start by chilling it in the mould before baking.

Where did you get this from please? It’s beautiful

Raspberried · 16/02/2026 11:48

I got it on eBay, but looks like there's several similar on etsy

After you take it out of the fridge and tip it out, I’d be tempted to experiment with partially slicing it so it breaks into slices easier. Otherwise it won’t slice nicely, it’ll essentially break up, assuming that it’s one large mild and not an individual one?

Raspberried · 16/02/2026 13:05

Good idea thanks - yes it's one large mould

nordicwannabe · 16/02/2026 14:54

Has no-one yet pointed out the most important flaw with putting it into the oven in the mould, which is that you could only make one at a time. That seems to go against a fundamental principle of shortbread!

nordicwannabe · 16/02/2026 14:55

(Even if it's quite big)

I have one much the same. They’re 60s I think ( it was MILs) and made of Bakerlite
Looks like the same material as mine so
No
don't put it in the oven
